The Automation Revelation (21:39 minutes)
UK managed service provider InTechnology says it's reaped tremendous
benefits from an automated lifecycle approach. "When you've got like 80
percent of all incidents raised automatically, it takes a massive burden
off the 24/7 teams and the customer support guys, who are not spending
the majority of their time creating incidents but actually working to
resolve them," said InTechnology's Ed Jackson.

Today's Story Highlights

All Eyes on Carrier IQ Following Spyware Allegations
Software from the company Carrier IQ that's preinstalled on many mobile
devices sold in the United States is capable of recording many of the
activities performed on those phones and potentially relaying the data
back to carriers, according to security researcher Trevor Eckhart.
Eckhart refers to the software as a "rootkit."

Keeping Your Devices Powered While on the Road
Think of the devices that have been made redundant by smartphones:
landline phone, laptop computer, GPS receiver, map, compass, flashlight,
still camera, video camera, gaming console, calculator, wristwatch,
electronic photo frame, newspaper, magazine, book, radio, weather radio,
police scanner, MP3 player, television, home entertainment system remote
control, main street bank, tape measure, bubble level, and coming up,
your wallet.

What Linux n00bs Need to Know
It's a sad fact of life that none of us are born experts in much of
anything, and certainly not in Linux. Noobs are how we must all begin
our adventures in the world of FOSS, in other words, much as we may try
hard to pretend otherwise. Remember those days? Well the folks over at
TuxRadar certainly do, and not long ago they launched an interesting
little discussion about it for the "ultimate newbie guide."

Office on iPad and Mac: Late's Just Barely Better Than Never
There's a new rumor circulating this week: Microsoft is working on a
version of its Office business suite for the iPad, along with a Mac OS X
Lion version, according to The Daily, citing unnamed sources. The Lion
version will be available via the Mac App Store. About freaking time!

Has Microsoft Missed the Tablet Boat?
Windows 8 tablets may have a very difficult time competing when they
finally hit the market, according to the findings of a recent Forrester
Research report. U.S. consumer desire for Windows tablets halved between
the first and third quarters of this year, said J.P. Gownder, one of the
report's authors.
