Podcast
Verizon and Google Enter Holiday Party Late and Sulky (12:17 minutes)
In this episode: Verizon's Galaxy Nexus arrives in the U.S. at an odd
moment in the holiday retail season; webOS is released from HP's dungeon
and sent to freely roam the world of open source; Microsoft and Nokia
pick the unassuming Lumia 710 as the first Nokia Windows Phone handset
to arrive in the U.S.; AT&T's bid to acquire T-Mobile starts to cool
off; the U.S. NTSB calls for a nationwide ban on using most personal
gadgets -- including headsets -- while driving.

Today's Story Highlights

Google Patents Driverless Car Tech for Sliding Through Tight Spots
Google has been awarded a United States patent for what, in legalese, is
"transitioning a mixed-mode vehicle to autonomous mode" -- essentially a
self-driving car. To be more precise, U.S. Patent 8,078,349 covers a car
being driven by a human that transitions to being autonomously driven.

Power Grid Cybersecurity: Who's In Charge?
Cybersecurity experts have been murmuring for some time that the United
States' power supply is open to cyberattacks. "If someone were to think
about attacking another nation, the first thing they'd do is take out
the power grid, since it's the hub around which other infrastructure
spokes revolve," said Patrick Miller, president and CEO of NESCO.

Hacking the Google TV Box Without Rooting It, Part 3
Last month, I succumbed to a peculiar urge to go out to my local,
friendly big-box consumer electronics retailer and drop almost a hundred
dollars on a product that had been panned by the critics on launch, had
a dubious life expectancy because of that, and had been almost
universally rejected by the TV networks and their agents -- Hulu, for
one.

Timeline: Pretty Interface, Ugly Rollout
Facebook will be disrupting the online lives of its members in the
coming weeks with the redesign of their profile pages. The redesign,
called "Timeline," has been available on a limited basis since it was
announced in September, but Thursday the social network announced a
system-wide rollout of the redesign.

Galaxy Nexus: Better Late Than Never
Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, the first phone to run Android Ice Cream
Sandwich, will be available in the U.S. starting Thursday from Verizon.
The 4G LTE phone sells for $299.99 with a two-year plan. The device
launched in Hong Kong and Europe three weeks ago and Wednesday in
Australia, but the timing of the phone's U.S. launch puts it on sale
right in the thick of holiday shopping madness.
