Today's Story Highlights

US Cybercounterterrorism Team Takes on al-Qaida
The interagency Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications
last week revealed that its Digital Outreach Team responded to pictures
posted by al-Qaida supporters on Yemeni discussion forums. To counter
the images of coffins covered by the U.S. flag, the center posted
pictures of coffins draped with the Yemen flag, along with Arabic
messages regarding the human toll inflicted on Yemen by al-Qaida.

Flame Malware Scorches Systems Across the Middle East
A cyberweapon of unprecedented sophistication is ripping through
computer systems in the Middle East, security vendor Kaspersky Lab
claims. It has dubbed the malware "Worm.Win32.Flame" -- or "Flame," for
short. Other security vendors, including McAfee and Symantec, have
issued similar warnings.

Dell's Tablet: Netbook Redux?
New details have emerged regarding an upcoming Dell tablet device, which
could be one of the first to run Windows 8. The tablet will reportedly
run on a dual-core Intel Cloverleaf processor with 2 GB of RAM and 128
GB of SSD storage. It will have a 10.1-inch display.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75237.html

DCAC: A Field Day for the Heat
"Domestic Communications Assistance Center" is the kind of name you'd
give to a couples counseling collective. At the FBI, though, it's the
name that's been given to an agency designed to be at the cutting edge
of digital snooping. The center is part of an initiative within the U.S.
Justice Department called "Going Dark."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75227.html

Enyo's End Is Not Nigh
Most of HP's webOS team, including Matt McNulty, head of the project, is
moving to Google according to a report by The Verge citing several
unnamed sources. The departing team is said to be almost wholly
responsible for Enyo's code. Enyo replaced Mojo as webOS's software
development kit in 2011.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75236.html

Oracle's Patent 'Disaster': Beginning of a Bright New Era?
It's been an eventful year already here in the Linux blogosphere, but it
seems fair to say few events have drawn as much attention as the Oracle
v. Google trial. Bloggers have been discussing it for weeks already, of
course, but developments last week brought forth nothing less than
dancing in the streets of the Linux blogosphere.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75235.html

Where Have All the Jailbreakers Gone?
The Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 was released Friday on the
Greenpois0n website. This is less than a month after iOS 5.1.1 was
released, on May 7. With Absinthe 2.0, iPhone users will be able to use
the latest version of iOS while keeping the phone open to applications
outside Apple's official App Store.

Facebook Is a Fraud
I've been up to my armpits talking about Facebook for most of this
month, and maybe because I'm unusually dense, just realized that
Facebook is a new kind of dot-com. By this I mean its revenue and profit
are based on a series of false beliefs. Unlike the first dot-coms, which
failed, Facebook does have revenue and profit, but just like them it has
been built on a stack of false assumptions.

Today's Story Highlights

Phantom 'Planet X' May Lurk at Solar System's Edge
A giant but unseen planet may lurk on the outer edge of our solar
system, making its presence known only by disrupting the orbits of
nearby celestial objects, according to Rodney Gomes, an astronomer at
the National Observatory of Brazil. Astronomers have long observed that
a group of small, icy bodies in the so-called "scattered disc" region
beyond the orbit of Neptune follow strange orbits around the sun.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75208.html

Are Foxconn Factory Workers in for a Raise?
Today in international tech news: Foxconn, the company that manufactures
iPods, iPads and other gear, is rumored to be doubling its employees'
wages in China. Also, an investigation in Italy could lead to a
nationwide block of one of the Web's biggest BitTorrent sites, and the
EU is abuzz about the cookie regulations to take effect in the UK this
Saturday.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75218.html

Facebook Pulls Camera App Out of Its Hat as Instagram Deal Pends
With some hoopla, the Facebook Camera app hit the iTunes App Store on
Thursday. A fairly simple app, it syncs with a user's Facebook account,
offers a variety of Instagram-like photo editing tools, and allows for
the upload of multiple photos at once. It also geotags photos and
collects all of the photos uploaded by friends in one stream that's
viewable within the app. The app's editing tools allow for cropping and
adding effects.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75217.html

SwiftKey Handily Unscrambles Sloppy Typing
I've got fond memories of physical keyboards embedded in smartphones. My
Palm Treos -- I had three -- were superb at composing email and SMS text
responses. I even made notes for a book I was writing on one Treo. I
speculate that the hardware keyboard is the principal differentiator
keeping BlackBerry's brand alive, along with its super-secure, cheapo
messaging system that was used to organize riots in the UK last year, of
course.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75209.html

Taking Axis for a Spin: New iOS Browser Is a Sweet Ride
"Exciting" hasn't been a word linked to Yahoo for a long time, but if
the moribund company has more surprises like Axis up its sleeve, that
may change. Axis is a combination iOS app and browser extension that
creates seamless browser connections among devices. What's more, it does
it with visual elan.

The Networked Economy (18:56 minutes)
Dynamic discounting proved to be a real game changer for Mediafly. "We
joke that it would be interesting if all of our customers leveraged
something like dynamic discounting," said CEO Carson Conant. "It would
be transformative for our business. It would drastically accelerate how
we can deploy cash. Then you think about it in terms of what could it do
for the economy."

Today's Story Highlights

Yahoo's Axis Strikes Alliance Between Desktop and Mobile
Yahoo on Thursday launched Axis, a new mobile browser and plug-in. It
lets users begin a search on a desktop and continue on iPhones and
iPads, or vice versa. It also offers a faster, smarter search with
instant answers and visual previews. Axis is offered both as a
standalone mobile browser for iOS devices and as a plug-in for desktop
browsers running HTML5.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75207.html

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Smartphone
If your device is having difficulty completing tasks like file
downloading, it's a dead giveaway that it needs some maintenance. We're
used to the idea of spending a bit of time running hard disk
defragmentation, spyware scans and other tools on our PCs, but we may
not be so au fait with what's needed on the limited-memory phones and
PC-substituting tablets we're using daily.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75201.html

Europeans Bet Big Against Facebook
Today in international tech news: A large number of European traders are
placing bets that Facebook's stock will continue to tumble in the coming
months. Also: Google defends itself against accusations from the EU, a
longtime Research In Motion executive steps down, a Latvian firm is
ordered to pay a fine after duping people into downloading fake apps,
and an Apple designer is knighted.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75205.html

Google's Astonishing Android About-Face
It can sometimes feel like there's a surprise around every corner here
in the Linux blogosphere, but it's not often we get to see a company the
size of Google make a dramatic shift. That, however, is just what last
week afforded when reports emerged that Google would take a markedly
different approach to the launch this fall of Android 5.0, or "Jelly
Bean."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75203.html

How Apple's Product Cycles Torture Customers Into Loving It
Apple MacBook Pro rumors, and to a lesser extent iMac, MacBook Air and
Mac Pro rumors, have been flying around fast and furious these days, and
all it's doing is stoking my fire for a new MacBook Pro. Every Tuesday,
which seems to be Apple's favorite day of the week for announcing new
products, I anxiously wait to see the Apple Online Store go down and a
press release to appear.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75194.html

Motorola Dreams Up a Sweeter TV Interface
Motorola Mobility this week unveiled its DreamGallery video navigation
software for content providers at a cable industry trade show.
DreamGallery lets users search hundreds of channels in seconds, bookmark
and store their favorite content in one place, and discover new content
tailored to their preferences.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75198.html

Plenty of Nail-Biting Moments Ahead for SpaceX Mission
After last weekend's delayed launch, the Falcon 9 rocket built by SpaceX
blasted off Tuesday, carrying the unmanned Dragon capsule into low-Earth
orbit. While the launch itself could have been considered breathtaking,
there will be more "hold your breath" moments ahead. The next one will
come on Thursday when the craft is scheduled to dock with the
International Space Station.

Today's Story Highlights

Rx for Medical Students: Take One Tablet
The educational e-book market has grown fiercer in the last few years,
raising the question of where the end game will leave educational
institutions in their attempts to reduce student churn, increase
productivity and radically reduce costs. As the battling e-textbook
giants try to cut exclusive deals and limit competitors' supplies of e-
content, educators are wondering if their choices of learning material
will be choked as a result.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75188.html

IBM Makes Siri Wait Outside
Enterprises are grappling with the growing trend of employees bringing
their own devices for use at work and the security and other issues that
gives rise to. However, IBM has implemented a simple solution: Prevent
the use of certain apps on employees' mobile devices in the workplace.
The company disables Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant, on
employees' iPhones.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75195.html

India Developing ID Tech to Tell Who's Who
Today in international tech news: India is developing technology to
identify its estimated 300 million citizens who don't have valid forms
of identification. Also, hackers in Germany seize a file-sharing site,
Google critiques the UK's plan for an opt-in feature to access adult
content, and British telecommincations giant Vodafone slashes billions
from its estimated value amid eurozone concerns.

Pyroom Text Editor Does Minimalism the Right Way
Whether you are writing code or creating editorial content, a noisy
computing environment often can silence your productivity. The Pyroom
Text Editor gives you a quiet environment where computing noise cannot
distract you from your creativity. Computing noise -- that is, computing
distractions from the task at hand -- comes from all the media outlets
your computer provides.

Verizon Eggs On Data-Chugging Mobile Video With Viewdini
Verizon Wireless on Tuesday introduced Viewdini, a mobile video
aggregation portal. It will run on the company's 4G LTE network and
let users search and access videos from a variety of content providers.
Partners include Comcast Xfinity, Hulu Plus, mSpot and Netflix. Others,
including Verizon FiOS, will be added soon. Viewdini is an Android app
that can be downloaded for free from the Google Play store.

Leap Aims to Put a Whole New World in Your Hands
Leap Motion released its new Leap motion control system for pre-order on
Monday, with shipment promised in early 2013. The $69.99 Leap is 200
times more sensitive than any similar existing technology and allows for
a variety of natural and intuitive 3D motion controls. Leap Motion is
shipping out developer kits as well, and the technology could soon be
incorporated in a variety of gaming, graphic design, robotics and other
software and computing systems.

Isolated Systems Need Love Too
Information security has changed a lot over the years. Way back in the
dinosaur days, life was simple. Companies set up a firewall at the
border and life was good. Bad guys stayed on one side of the fancy
flashing box, and our personnel lived in the pristine, attacker-free
paradise on the inside. Well, that's how it was supposed to work, at
least. Over the years, the model changed.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75175.html

Germany Kicks Microsoft StreetSide to the Curb
Today in international tech news: In Germany, Microsoft's StreetSide is
running into similar problems that Google's StreetView service faced.
Elsewhere, the Associated Press takes a long look at the case of Cuba's
disappearing high-speed Internet cable, a Japanese chipmaker plans to
cut 6,000 jobs, and Spotify launches in Australia.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75177.html

Why China Stuck Its Foot in Android's Door
China's antitrust authorities have approved Google's purchase of
Motorola Mobility, on the condition that the Android operating system
remain open source and its code be made freely available to original
equipment manufacturers. Android devices had nearly 74 percent of the
Chinese market in Q4, 2011, and that means Android is in a dominant
position, China's Commerce Department said.

A Slap to the Interface: 3 Apps for OS X Window Management
Features that Apple has added to OS X over the years, like Mission
Control and Spaces, have given users more options for laying out their
work areas. Each time another edition of OS X comes out with new
interface abilities, the desktop feels more manageable, less
constricted. However, there are still a few window management tricks and
functions that OS X can't do on its own.

Microsoft Tries a So.cl Experiment
Microsoft opened So.cl, its experimental approach to a social network,
to all users Monday, aiming to create a place to find and share online
articles, videos and digital content, all with the help of its search
engine Bing. So.cl doesn't appear to be a direct challenge to
established social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.

Chrome Snatches IE's Browser Crown
While Google remains the search engine champion, it is also now
apparently the top dog with the Web browsers where searches take place.
Google's Chrome is now the most popular Web browser, having overtaken
Microsoft's Internet Explorer worldwide, according to the latest figures
from StatCounter. Chrome took the lead with 32.76 percent of the market
compared to IE's 31.94 percent.

Today's Story Highlights

Tiny Welsh Burg Paints the Town Wiki
Monmouth, Wales, has become the first "Wikipedia town," making it an
area of international interest as it informally redubbed itself
"Monmouthpedia." The Saturday event was attended by 70 to 75 people,
said project leader John Cummings -- a sizable group for the area. That
day, some 1,100 QR codes that Cummings, volunteers and city officials
had placed on various points of interest around the town went live.

Information Highwaymen Will Follow the Cybermoney
An FBI report about Bitcoin leaked to a number of online media outlets
earlier this month caused anxiety in some corners of the Internet.
Bitcoin "provides a venue for individuals to generate, transfer,
launder, and steal illicit funds with some anonymity," says the 20-page
report. "Bitcoin will likely continue to attract cyber criminals who
view it as a means to move or steal funds as well as a means of making
donations to illicit groups," it predicts.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75162.html

EC Pitches Google an Ultimatum
Today in international tech news: The European Commission warns Google
that it may have breached antitrust laws and offers the company a chance
to settle without formal charges. In other Google news, China regulators
approve the company's $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, the
finishing touch on Google's biggest-ever acquisition.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75165.html

In Search of the Next World-Changing Tech Company
With Facebook now public, the search is on for that next big-idea
company that can excite the market. Coincidently, Nvidia has its
Emerging Companies Summit about this time of year, where it has a series
of sessions that allow each firm the opportunity to present what makes
them unique and powerful. Since I sat on one of the panels tasked with
asking the hard questions of these firms on stage, I got a unique view
of each of the presenters.

Who Loves Ya, Linux Baby?
If there's anything important in this competitive world, it's the
ability to tell one's friends from one's enemies. We here in the Linux
blogosphere tend to be pretty good at that, but recently a surprising
turn of events left us befuddled. Namely: Mozilla's decision to leave
Linux support out of the initial release of its upcoming Web Apps
marketplace.

Beautifully Dark Design Makes Up for 'Crow's' Gameplay Shortcomings
Every two or three months, an iOS game manages to snag more than a brief
glance and actually inspires me to buy and download it. "Crow" is one of
those games. The icon for the game implies a lot -- it's got a wicked
darkness to it, is slickly designed, and it evokes the idea that there's
trouble somewhere.

Today's Story Highlights

London's Burning Over Government Surveillance Plans
The UK government has proposed plans to monitor the electronic
communications of everyone in that country. It claims it's not seeking
to read the content of the communications, according to reports, but
instead wants to know who the senders and recipients of messages are,
the places from which messages are sent, and other details such as the
length of messages and their formats.

SpaceX Dragon to Soar to Launch History on Falcon's Wings
When the SpaceX Dragon capsule blasts off from Cape Canaveral Air Force
Station atop the company's Falcon rocket Saturday morning, it will be
doing more than just setting off on another cargo-laden trip to the
International Space Station. Rather, as the very first commercial
attempt ever to fly to the ISS, this test launch will be making history.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75145.html

Iran Threatens to Sue Over Google Maps Slap
Today in international tech news: Still irked about Google Maps' non-
labeling of the Persian Gulf, Iranian state-run media says the country
is considering legal action against the search company. In the UK,
police implement a system to extract data from mobile devices of
detained suspects, while Sky News talks with police about the broadcast
of a rape victim's name via a televised Twitter feed.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75149.html

iPhone 5 Screen: Will Things Get Ugly?
Should Apple decide to increase the display size of the next version of
its bestselling iPhone, it could present developers with new sets of
both challenges and opportunities. Speculation about Apple boosting the
screen found on the next edition of its smartphone isn't new, but it was
renewed this week with a report predicting the new iPhone would have a
display of at least 4 inches.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75147.html

Scalado Album's Photo-Mapping Skill Earns It a Niche
Have you ever found yourself scrolling endlessly around your phone's
chronologically arranged photograph album -- called "Gallery" in Android
-- looking for a photograph you've captured? If you can remember the
specific place but not the date, then Scalado Album may be for you. I
say "may be" because there are some downsides to using it over the stock
"Gallery" app, which I'll get to.

Paralyzed Woman Takes Sip of Joe Using Mind-Powered Robo Arm
Researchers have developed a robotic arm that has enabled a paralyzed
woman to drink a cup of coffee -- by directly controlling it with her
mind. The development has raised the question of whether this approach
could perhaps restore some mobility to similarly affected people in the
future.
