Today's Story Highlights

On Paper, Facebook's a Different Story
Facebook on Thursday announced next week's launch of Paper, a free app
for iOS that combines user and curated content into a personalized news
medium. Users can create stories as well as receive stories based on
their interests and organized into sections. The sections cover
everything from sports, world news and animal pictures to business,
photography and food.

Canada Used Airport WiFi Snooparound
Canadian authorities used information culled from a free Internet
service at a major national airport to track the wireless devices of
scores of travelers. The Communications Security Establishment Canada,
or CESC, received information from the unnamed airport's free WiFi
system and then used that data to track travelers whose devices later
popped up at WiFi locations in other parts of the country.

Nintendo Makes Health the New Name of the Game
Nintendo is planning a new product offering that will take the company
beyond traditional gaming and into the world of health, it announced on
Thursday. Coming hard on the heels of a grim earnings report that
prompted a pay cut for President and CEO Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's
announcement was described with only the barest of details at a briefing
for investors and media.

Here Comes the Sun-Powered MacBook?
Apple wants to use natural energy sources to keep MacBooks powered while
on the move. The company has won a patent for a laptop with a lid that
features a second display, touch inputs and solar cells. The latter
could help users keep their MacBooks' batteries topped up without having
to plug in an external charger. Apple filed its application in 2010, and
USPTO granted it this week.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79892.html

Viber's a Worthy Alternative to Outgoing GrooveIP
Google has been clamping down on third-party apps that ride piggyback on
its Google Voice telephony service. A merger between Google Voice and
Hangouts this year will result in the shuttering of an open protocol
exploited by apps that used the Google Voice service for free SMS
texting and VoIP calling. The days of free Internet-based in-U.S.
smartphone calls over Google's network are numbered.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79881.html

Slipshod Security, Human Frailty Made @N Ripe for Plucking
GoDaddy reportedly has admitted one of its employees handed out customer
information to a scammer who carried out a scheme to obtain a prime
Twitter account. Naoki Hiroshima, a developer at Echofon, this week
detailed how the scammer was able to force him to hand over his prime
Twitter account, @N. The scammer used social engineering to accomplish
his goal.

Today's Story Highlights

Smartphone Could Hold the Key to Your Room
Starwood Hotels & Resorts is rolling out a program in two of its hotels
-- one in New York City's Harlem and one in Cupertino, Calif. -- that
will allow customers to try a new lock system. Guests can download a
mobile app that will allow them to virtually check in once they've
arrived at the hotel. Then they'll be able to open their room door with
the tap or wave of their smartphone.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79886.html

What Went Wrong With the iPhone 5c?
The iPhone 5c has been bugging me. As a product, it's so good -- and yet
so wrong. By not saying much at all during the financial conference call
with analysts this week, Apple has confirmed doubts while presenting new
questions. Does the iPhone 5c represent a colossal misstep by Apple? Or
is it just a mediocre product that remains profitable? Can it be both at
the same time?
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79885.html

This Is Your Game on Glass
Google on Monday announced that it had hacked together five simple games
that take advantage of the unique features of Glass. The company
presented a brief demo of the five-title mashup as Mini Games Glassware,
and it encouraged Glass developers to offer feedback.Google emphasized
that voice commands could minimize the time it would take a gamer to get
into the action.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79880.html

Installing Linux: The Good, Bad and Ugly
Good or bad, useful or not, implementation of the Unified Extensible
Firmware Interface and Microsoft's Secure Boot extension might well foul
the fuel driving consumer migration to the Linux desktop. It was not
until I attempted to do a Linux installation on a new Gateway Series DX
desktop with Windows 8 installed that I stared that UEFI monster down.

Podcast
New IT Tools Untie Tangled Webs of Business Data (36:23)
"Instead of buying three or four database types -- a structured
database, something that can handle text, a solution that handles
semi-structured or structured, or even a high performance analytical
engine -- what if the tool chain abstracts much of that complexity?"
said Matt Wolken, executive director for Dell Software. "This means the
tools that you use every day can comprehend any database type."

Today's Story Highlights

iPhone May See the World Through Different Lens
Smartphones have been steadily stealing shutterbugs from digital camera
makers, but most of those converts are coming from the point-and-shoot
snapper crowd. The next step is to target more sophisticated
photographers who use cameras with interchangeable lenses. Apple appears
to be getting ready for that battle. It just won two patents that would
allow lenses to be attached to a mobile device.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79878.html

Gear and Gadgets for Hitting the Slopes
Skiing technologies have undergone a revolution in recent years, with
skis, gear and gadgets changing how a new generation experiences the
sport. These new technologies are making skiing safer, greener and more
connected. Rocker design is one trend that has been finding its way into
the skiing world over the last several years -- with lift and curvature
on both tips and tails.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79871.html

Apple's Next iPhone: Big's In, Plastic's Out
iPhone rumors hit pretty much every week, but some rise to the top --
with or without great sources. The latest bigger-screen iPhone 6 rumor
comes courtesy of three authors who span the globe, writing together
from Hong Kong, Taipei and San Francisco. According to "people familiar
with the situation," they reported that two new iPhone models would be
released in the second half of this year.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79876.html

With B1 Archiver, No Need to RTFM
B1 Archiver is one of only a few archiver managers for the Linux
platform that is reliably simple to use. Simplicity is a key trait that
distinguishes the B1 Archiver from other Linux compression tools. In the
category of smart-looking and simple archivers, one of my favorites is
PeaZip. B1's GUI adds a new dimension that redefines ease of use on the
Linux desktop, though.

Google Glass Now Available for Explorers With Fuzzy Vision
Google is making Glass more accessible to consumers who need to wear
prescription glasses or prefer to wear their Glass with shades. Its new
Titanium Collection of frames can accommodate prescription lenses. There
are four new styles of frames in the collection: Bold, Curve, Thin and
Split. Google studied the eyewear industry and frame styles before
selecting the designs.

Learn Robotics and Amuse Office Mates With uArm
UFactory's uArm, which is an Arduino-powered 4-axis parallel-mechanism
robot arm created for personal desktop use, has blown past its $5,000
funding goal on Kickstarter with more than a month to go. Clearly, uArm
has struck a nerve, generating more than $60,000 in pledges in just a
handful of days. The uArm features a suction-cup base that will adhere
to your desk.

US, British Intelligence Scoop Data From Smartphone Apps
Don't get angry, but... U.S. and British intelligence agencies have long
been mining data from smartphone apps such as the wildly popular Angry
Birds. The National Security Agency and its British brethren at the
Government Communications Headquarters reportedly have targeted the
swell of data moving to and fro on mobile apps, based on previously
secret documents leaked by Edward Snowden.

Stratasys Makes 3D-Printed Objects Pop
Stratasys is planning to take 3D printing to a new level with the launch
of the first color, multimaterial printer. The Objet500 Connex3 Color
Multi-material 3D Printer offers design and manufacturing efficiencies
and faster production of quality products, according to the company.
Working in a similar fashion to a 2D inkjet printer, it uses three
materials to produce different colors.

Neiman Marcus Alerts Customers to Hack Attack
Neiman Marcus has announced that some 1.1-million customer credit and
debit cards may have been exposed in a hack attack. The retailer was
first alerted to the intrusion at the beginning of the year. It appears
that "sophisticated, self-concealing malware" able to obtain payment
card information was active in the company's systems between July 16 and
Oct. 30, 2013, CEO Karen Katz said.
