The Sky-High Expectations Surrounding Mobile Networks (23:34 minutes)
Users today want to be able to access more services using more devices.
They want coordination across all the platforms they use, they want
security and privacy, and they want the full support of their IT
departments. It's all a very tall order, and networks will need to
adjust rapidly or the latency and hassle of access and performance
issues will get in the way of users, their new expectations, and their
behaviors.

Today's Story Highlights

Intel Takes Medfield-Powered Phone and Tablet Out for a Spin
Intel is stepping up the drumbeat around its efforts to penetrate the
mobile handheld device market leading up to the 2012 Consumer
Electronics Show, which will be held in Las Vegas in January. The
semiconductor giant recently sent prototype devices, known as "reference
designs," to the MIT Technology Review to try out.

New MINE Tools Can Refine Mountains of Data
Massive data sets -- a season's worth of baseball statistics, for
example, or health data from around the world -- can contain some very
revealing knowledge. The problem confronting researchers, though, is
finding it. That may be a little easier with some tools developed by
scientists at Harvard University and the Broad Institute.

The 5 Pillars of Master Data Management
In the last three years, corporate views of master data management have
rapidly evolved from data-centric confusion to a point where companies
now focus on the consumers of master data and the business processes
that consume it. In the next two to five years, the companies that use
this MDM momentum will gain a strategic advantage.

gDesklets: Semi-Sweet Eye Candy
My interest in desktop eye candy vacillates with the seasons. The added
productivity it brings to a particular desktop design is also a factor.
Now that GNOME 3 forces a desktop without icons, I took a look at how
useful the gDesklets Project might be.

Paul Allen Shoots for Low Orbit
Billionaire Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen has started a new company
that will launch payloads into space from a monster aircraft:
Stratolaunch Systems. He has revived his relationship with aerospace
pioneer Burt Rutan to further his plans.

IBM's Tech Predictions Prompt Deep Thoughts, Chuckles
IBM looked into its crystal ball and saw five technologies becoming
ubiquitous in the next five years. While IBM spends most of its time,
effort and intelligence in the innards of big organizations, the five
technologies it sees on the horizon are very personal. For example,
we'll be able to use our own motion, as well as motion around us, to
harness energy. IBM imagines extending this concept to running water.
