ALM: The Workflow Conqueror (16:59 minutes)
"ALM goes a long way to be able to conquer the various workflows," says
Todd Eaton, director of ALM tools and services at McKesson. "Within an
organization, there will be various workflows being done, but you're
still able to bring up those measurements, like another point that you
are bringing up, and have a fairly decent comparison."

Today's Story Highlights

Intel Envisions the Rise of the Ultrabook
Intel has unveiled details of its plans for the breed of super-thin,
rapid-on, tablet-like laptops which it calls "Ultrabooks" at China's
Computex Taipei 2011. The computer chip giant expects Ultrabooks to take
over 40 percent of the laptop market within six to nine months. The new
super-thin laptops run on Intel's Sandy Bridge processor.

Is Microsoft Finally Ready to Put Its Tablet Talents on Display?
Microsoft will preview specially made Windows tablet software as soon as
this week, Bloomberg recently reported. It will showcase the operating
system's touchscreen interface running on hardware that uses an Nvidia
Tegra chip, according to the report. "Right now, the stated strategy is
to have Windows 8 run on everything except smartphones," Rob Enderle,
principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72551.html

Apple Confirms iCloudy Forecasts for WWDC
Apple on Tuesday gave a thumbnail sketch of what will be demoed at its
World Wide Developers Conference, scheduled to kick off June 6. On
opening day, CEO Steve Jobs will deliver a keynote address together with
a team of company executives, Apple said. The keynote will include the
unveiling of iCloud, Apple's cloud services offering, as well as
information about Mac OS X Lion and iOS 5, Cupertino stated.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72555.html

So, What's the Deal With MicroSkype?
Well, the Linux bloggers down at the blogosphere's Broken Windows Lounge
had just barely finished chanting Skype's funeral dirge last week when
word came that there might be reason to belt out another round. Sure
enough, turned out Skype has decided to cut its ties with the free and
open source Asterisk telephony system.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72549.html

OtterBox Defender: Handsome and Heavy iPad 2 Armor
When I received my shiny new Apple iPad 2, my first fear was protecting
my new gadget from breaks or scratches. I know the iPad 2 is wicked
strong, but I've also seen tough electronic devices fail in unexpected
ways. So extra-robust protection is a must for me, and a super-
protective case is right for my lifestyle.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72540.html

The Tech Market on Stranger Tides
This is turning out to be an amazing decade, with companies getting a
rebirth, other firms getting new identities, and still others sliding
into delusional obscurity. Microsoft released the impressive Windows
Phone platform and recently added 500, yep 500, new features, which
should give the Android folks a bit of a scare, though Jobs, who is
apparently doing OK, likely thinks they missed a meeting.

Beyond War Room Network Management (36:24 minutes)
"Today, if you were to look into a customer's IT department managing a
network environment, you would often see a war-room-like approach to
managing networks," said HP's Ashish Kuthiala. Spiraling IT complexities
are running headlong into shrinking budgets. This is a job for
comprehensive, automated, integrated network management tools.

Today's Story Highlights

Gmail Gives Power to the People Widget
Google has introduced a new tool to the social networking world using
one of its strong suits: Gmail. In the next couple weeks, Google will
debut a feature for Gmail called the "People Widget." The widget will
appear to the right of messages and display information about contacts,
including recent messages, shared documents, calendar events, statuses
and, perhaps most striking, photos.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72547.html

Internet Explorer Flaw Lets Hackers Into the Cookie Jar
Italian security researcher Rosario Valotta has discovered a new way for
hackers to steal their victims' online credentials -- stealing the
session cookies from whatever site a victim is visiting. The stolen
cookies can then be used to get victims' computers to download malware,
forge clicks or send messages, according to Valotta's website.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72539.html

Are Android Tablets Stumbling Out of the Gate?
Based on initial sales reports and some tablet market flip flops, the
few Android tablets that have hit the shelves so far seem to have
crashed and burned. Early sales figures indicate that no Android tab is
coming close to being the much-awaited Apple iPad alternative. But will
time heal all? Does the Android tablet just need the same growing time
that consumers gave the iPad?
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72538.html

Your Move, Patent Trolls
What is Lodsys? It's a patent troll company. And by all accounts, when
it comes time to check in at Hell, patent trolls are said to have a spot
right near the front of the line, right next to the people that put
kittens in burlap sacks and throw them into rivers. But Lodsys is not
just any patent troll -- it's the type of patent troll that makes other
patent trolls squirm.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72534.html

Investment Firm Pres. Calls on Microsoft to Boot Ballmer
Time to move over, Ballmer. Greenlight Capital President David Einhorn
has reportedly called for Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer, to step down.
Einhorn spoke on the subject Wednesday at the Ira Sohn Investment
Conference in New York City. Einhorn showed support for Microsoft in
general, recommending the company's stock as a "buy" because the company
trades at what he called a remarkable discount.

Today's Story Highlights

Google Whips Out an E-Wallet
Google officially unveiled its e-wallet Thursday in a presentation with
its partners at an event in New York. Google executives demonstrated
making purchases and downloading e-coupons with the e-wallet through a
Google Nexus S Android smartphone. They added that eventually consumers
might even store their drivers' licenses in it.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72536.html

WinPho Developers Get a Bite of the Mango
Microsoft has rolled out app development tools for Mango, the Windows
Phone 7 update about which the company released details earlier this
week. Registered developers can download the Mango Beta Windows Phone
Developer Tools from AppHub, Casey McGee, marketing manager for Windows
Phone, told TechNewsWorld.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72531.html

New Mac Malware: Passwords? We Don't Need No Stinking Passwords!
The newest strain of malware aimed at the Mac OS X platform doesn't
require a user password to install and spread, according to a warning
from security company Intego. Like a similar scam that arose weeks ago,
this new version of malware promises visitors of certain websites a free
security scan.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72533.html

Where in the World Is the Linux Desktop Thriving?
The old "market share" debate is one that's all too familiar to most
Linux fans, particularly the tired -- not to mention wildly unrealistic
-- "1 percent" figure detractors love to cite as desktop Linux's
portion. So it was hard not to sit up and take notice earlier this month
when the Pingdom blog published a post entitled "The top 20 strongholds
for desktop Linux."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72529.html

Chengdu Blast Heard Loud and Clear in Cupertino
Friday's deadly explosion at a Foxconn factory in Chengdu, China,
continues to dog Apple. The blast led Foxconn, one of Apple's major
contract manufacturers, to shut down all its polishing plants. Investors
are concerned supplies of the hot-selling iPad 2 will fall off.
Analysts' estimates of the impact range from miniscule to a production
loss of 2.8 million units.

Android Seen Reaching for Its Wallet
Google will unveil a mobile payment service on Thursday in New York,
according to a recent Bloomberg report. This will be available on
Android smartphones from Sprint Nextel. The service will let Android
smartphone owners with the NFC feature enabled pay for goods and redeem
coupons through their handsets.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72528.html

Barnes & Noble Tells a Simpler Story With New Nook E-Reader
Barnes & Noble has introduced its new Nook -- a more elementary, less
expensive black and white WiFi e-reader device geared toward a simpler
market and hoping to compete in the growing e-reader field. The new Nook
unrolls with some key differences from its predecessors and competitors.
Primarily, it features a touchscreen and offers a battery life of up to
two months.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72525.html

Beyond the Point of No Return: Is There Life in Black Holes?
Few ideas convey the mystery and awe-inspiring nature of space better
than the black hole. Dark, vast and little understood, black holes in
many ways represent all that we still don't know about the universe.
With their seemingly infinite emptiness and general unexplorability,
they're also more than a little terrifying. Imagine what it would be
like, then, to learn that life exists in these expansive regions of no
escape.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72493.html

gLabels Does the Job but Wouldn't Make Patrick Bateman Sweat
It is rare that I lament about a task I cannot do in Linux better than
when I used that Redmond OS that rhymes with lindows. But you can hear
me pining for those commercial and shareware programs every time I have
to create a printing job around business cards or mailing labels on my
Linux rigs. For many of these specialized label and card-making jobs,
gLabels is a very workable solution.

Federal IT Landscape Requires More Gold, Less Glitter
Federal chief information officers appear to be heeding the unofficial
Missouri state slogan: "I'm from Missouri -- Show Me." In a challenging
time for procurement of IT systems and services, CIOs are trying to
adopt improved methods for acquiring and managing information resources.

Microsoft Delivers the Mango Juice
May 25, 2011 at 3:05 AM

Among its various new features, Mango has smarter Live Tiles that can carry notifications and offer Twitter and LinkedIn support. Windows Live Messenger and Facebook Chat are integrated into Mango out of the box. Mango will also add visual voicemail support. Mango organizes information around people. For example, conversation threads will run across applications so users can switch between text, Facebook Chat and Windows Live Messenger within the same conversation. Users can view multiple email accounts in one linked inbox.

Facebook Wants to Hook 'Em Young
May 25, 2011 at 1:10 AM

Facebook hopes to one day be permitted to draw young children into the Facebook fold. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently suggested altering legal restrictions that prevent children younger than 13 from signing up for a Facebook account. Currently, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, a federal law passed in 1998, mandates that 13 is the minimum age at which a child may sign up for accounts on sites like Facebook. Zuckerberg argued that in our increasingly technology-driven society, education in online media is what will set students apart and boost the economy.

Is Android Really the 'Open' Platform?
May 24, 2011 at 8:00 PM

Much has been claimed by Google ever since the infant days of its Android mobile operating system. The claim it has seemed to champion the most is that its platform is open by nature. One of the biggest complaints about iOS has been Apple's lockdown policy, so naturally, Google would want to make its platform's openness a main selling point. Lately, though, it is starting to become apparent that Android isn't as "open" as we were led to believe.
