The Consumerization of IT (24:03 minutes)
IT organizations are being pulled in opposite directions: They're being
asked to become simultaneously more open and more secure. Is that even
possible? Increased mobility "is cool for the consumer, but that creates
some very serious complexities for the enterprise security folks," said
HP's Rafal Los. "Often you get devices that aren't meant to be consumed
in an enterprise."

Today's Story Highlights

HP Slings webOS Into Tablet Territory With TouchPad Release
HP will release the TouchPad in select markets Friday, putting the webOS
mobile operating system the company acquired when it purchased Palm into
an HP-branded tablet. "WebOS is a very solid operating system that's
very competitive with both iOS and the Android offerings," Tom Mainelli,
a research manager at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.

Bridging the Great Dev/Ops Divide
Under the legacy approach to software development, developers write
code, which is then frozen, tested by another group, released and
ultimately supported by yet another team again. Under this highly
structured approach, large enterprise software applications are
typically updated every 6 to 12 months, and up to several years can pass
between major operating system releases.

Editors Play New Reel in Final Cut Fiasco
Apple has attempted to dial down the flack it's received since the
release of its latest movie-editing application, Final Cut Pro X, by
publishing an FAQ that addresses some of the editing world's edgier
criticisms. Meanwhile, professional film editors angered by Apple's
recently released Final Cut Pro X video editing software are flocking to
sign a petition.

Are Ubuntu's Glory Days Over?
If there's any lesson to be learned in high school, it's that popularity
is a fickle mistress. One day, you can be riding high on the strength of
your awesome gaming skills, say, and the next, a fleeting fashion faux
pas can bring you crashing down again. But maybe that was just Linux
Girl. In any case, popularity is nothing if not changeable, as Ubuntu
has aptly demonstrated in recent weeks.

The Next iPhone: Is Apple Mulling a Double-Down?
This year's WWDC came and went without the appearance of a new iPhone,
breaking with years of tradition. This disruption to Apple's established
released cycle, combined with other factors, may be upsetting some
portfolios. "People are concerned about Apple's growth peaking, Steve
Jobs' health and the delayed launch of the new iPhone," Brian Marshall,
an analyst at Gleacher, told MacNewsWorld.

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft Wants to Patent High-Tech Snoop Software
Microsoft has applied for a patent on technology that may let its user
secretly intercept Voice over IP communications, amend the content and
store it. The application was filed in December 2009 and was recently
made public. The technology could allow the monitoring of conversations,
voice messages and video conferences over a variety of devices,
including smartphones, laptops and gaming devices.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72771.html

Google Enters the Ring for Social Smackdown, Round 2
Google took a second stab at social networking Tuesday with the launch
of Google+, a program designed to interactively connect users and
challenge worldwide social networking king Facebook. The search engine
giant failed with its first attempt at an online social network, last
year's Google Buzz.

US National IT Security in a Post-Lulz World
Between the repeated attacks on the United States government's IT
infrastructure by foreign hackers and incursions by LulzSec, a hacker
community whose members wandered in and out of government cybersystems
before publicly disbanding this week, it's not difficult to conclude
that the U.S.'s federal IT infrastructure is the cybersecurity
equivalent of Swiss cheese.

Arista Transcoder: Media Conversions Without the Inquisition
Converting media files can be a huge chore. The lack of standardization
results in competing audio and video file standards. The file conversion
fiasco is further compounded by a lack of choices that do not require a
computer degree to use. Frustration mounts in using various media
players and conversion tools that handle some but not all of the
available file types.

Americans Hot for E-Readers, Tepid About Tablets
E-reader ownership jumped to 12 percent of adult U.S. consumers in May,
doubling from 6 percent in the past six months, the first time sales
have been in double digits, according to a new report from the Pew
Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. The growth spurt is
outpacing that of tablet computers.

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft Battles for Sky Supremacy With Office 365 Launch
Microsoft on Tuesday launched its newest cloud service, Office 365, in
40 markets. The service consists of online versions of Microsoft Office,
SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft Lync. Microsoft's building
up an ecosystem around the service, and more than 20 service providers
around the world have announced they'll offer Office 365 to customers
this year.

Internet Censorship Storm Is Coming, Warns Schmidt
Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt foresees more troublesome days
ahead between the search engine giant and the governments of the world.
Censorship is on the rise around the globe, he said Monday, at a Dublin
summit on militant violence. It will step up considerably in the wake of
the "Arab Spring" of 2011, Schmidt warned, which resulted in the
overthrow of governments in Tunisia and Egypt.

Designing Technology's Future
User interfaces will not necessarily change the way we live -- the
technology will. However, for technology to work and be embraced by new
consumers and emerging populations around the world, user interface
design is crucial; it enables people to access and use the advancements
in technology. Without simple and intuitive interfaces, end-users are
not able to consume the myriad of new technologies that come out every
day.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72757.html

MyPad's Handsome Face Suffers the Occasional Tic
Facebook has had no trouble making friends with iPhone users. The social
network's iPhone app is the most popular free application in Apple's
store. For iPad, though, it's a very different story. iPads have been in
the hands of users for well over a year, yet Facebook still hasn't
delivered an app targeted to that platform.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72754.html

Google Axes Health Service Due to Feeble Response
Google announced Friday it will discontinue its Google Health service, a
program launched three years ago to allow users to upload and store
electronic health records in a central, online repository. The service
was designed to provide users with an online database where they could
manage personal medical records from home, saving costs and adding
efficiencies.

Today's Story Highlights

LulzSec Heads for the Hills, Anon Hacks On
The hacker group LulzSec has apparently decided to shut down operations
and sail off into the sunset. Fellow hacker community Anonymous, with
which LulzSec has teamed up, may take up where LulzSec left off. "We can
confirm that all @LulzSec members have reported aboard," Anonymous
tweeted.

New-Fangled Computer Chips Could Mimic Brain Synapses
A recently published University of Exeter paper brings the possibility
of achieving brain-like computing one step closer. The paper, published
in Advanced Materials, states the result of a study that demonstrated
for the first time the ability to simultaneously perform information and
storage tasks using phase-change materials.

AMD, Google, Oracle, Harry Potter and Robopocalypse
OK, last week was a really interesting week. We had AMD basically
divorcing itself from Intel's model after living under Intel's shadow
from inception; we had Google repeating yet another of Microsoft's
greatest mistakes; we had IBM repeat a famous political debate by
basically saying Oracle wasn't an enterprise vendor anymore; and we had
Harry Potter's author begin to kill off publishers and book stores.

Wild Berries App: A Field Guide to the Delicious and the Deadly
When I was a kid, I spent quite a bit of time rambling around the local

you're bound to stumble upon wild berries. Some of the berries you'll
find are bright, shiny, and altogether appealing ... but also
potentially poisonous.

The WebGL Battle in the Great Browser Wars
Even on the sunniest, most peaceful days here in the Linux blogosphere,
it's a pretty safe bet that the Great Browser Wars are still being waged
somewhere, whether or not we can actually overhear the particular
skirmish of the moment. Last week, however, the din of the battle roared
loud enough for all to hear as Microsoft and Mozilla come to blows.

associates; Nokia releases its first -- and quite possibly last -- phone
on the MeeGo platform while simultaneously showing the world what's in
store for its first WinPho 7 handset; Wall Street smacks Research In
Motion after a disappointing quarterly report; quibbling Hulu owners
reportedly mull the sale of the online TV venture; ICANN opts to allow
website owners to use unique top-level domains -- for a hefty price.

LulzSec's Latest Lark Targets Ariz. Cops
Hacker community LulzSec has revealed it's broken into the Arizona law
enforcement agency's servers and released hundreds of sensitive
documents on the Internet. "We are targeting AZDPS specifically because
we are against SB1070 and the racial profiling anti-immigrant police
state that is Arizona," LulzSec stated.

Mozilla and Firefox 5: Upgrade or Die!
Mozilla released Firefox 5 earlier this week, just three months after
rolling out Firefox 4 and a month after it released version 5 in beta.
Version 5 has "more than 1,000 improvements," which include the "Do Not
Track" privacy feature and support for the CSS Animations standard,
among other things.

GNOME 3 vs. Unity: A Schism in the Making?
The face of the Linux desktop is drastically evolving. While the Linux
communities struggle to bring more business and home users to the Linux
desktop, existing users face choices about adopting redesigned desktop
shells or finding suitable replacements. The fallout might well be the
start of a Great New Linux Schism.

Hulu Is Gussying Up for Suitors
One way or another, change is clearly coming for the online television
website Hulu. Either it will be acquired by Yahoo, or it will put itself
out on the market to be snapped up by another deep-pocketed company.
Yahoo apparently has made an unsolicited offer for the company,
according to news reports citing anonymous sources. However, this is no
hostile takeover brewing.

Apple's Touchscreen Patent: If You Want Blood, You Don't Got It
Apple was awarded a patent Wednesday relating to touchscreens. The
certification arrived more than three years after the company filed, and
it set off mild concern among other touchscreen makers. The patent, U.S.
No. 7966578, gives Apple control of "a computer-implemented method, for
use in conjunction with a portable multifunction device with a touch
screen display," according to the patent.

The IT Infrastructure Renaissance (38:59 minutes)
The face of high-performance, low-cost computing is changing. In just
the past few years, the definition of what a modern IT infrastructure
needs and what it needs to do has finally come into focus. Data centers
will converge their servers, storage and network platforms for
efficiency and security. Virtualization will grow like a weed. Hybrid
and cloud models will become the norm.

Today's Story Highlights

CEO Pours Out the Juice on Nokia's First WinPho 7 Handset
Nokia CEO Stephen Elop Thursday showed off the company's first Windows
Phone 7 device in what he described as a "secret" briefing to a room
full of journalists. The announcement comes hard on the heels of the
company's Wednesday reveal of the N9, a new Nokia smartphone running the
MeeGo mobile OS.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72734.html

Facebook Shouldn't Wall Off Minors
Neelie Kroes, EC vice president for the digital agenda, has expressed
concern that most social networking sites don't make younger users'
profiles private by default. "I am disappointed that most social
networking sites are failing to ensure that minors' profiles are
accessible only to their approved contacts by default. I will be urging
them to make a clear commitment to remedy this ...," she said.

Securing SCADA Systems: Where Do We Start?
Many leading industrial and governmental network infrastructures employ
SCADA systems to automate, monitor and control crucial physical
processes, including manufacturing and testing, electrical transmission,
water and fuel transport, and traffic signal operation. Because of their
crucial importance and prominence in the field, SCADA systems have
increasingly been the target of criminal and terrorist activities.

The Stomach-Churning Prospect of Installing Linux
Ninety percent of today's Linux distributions "can be easily used by
just about anyone when properly configured and presented with a couple
minutes of explanation to the new user," wrote Thoughts on Technology
blogger Jeff Hoogland in a post on LXer provocatively titled, "Anyone
can use the Linux operating system."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72730.html

Time to Start Writing That iPhone 5 Wish List
I had pretty much written off the idea that Apple would release a new
form-factor for its upcoming iPhone 5, believing that Apple would let
the phone's present form ride for another year, much like the company
did when it introduced the iPhone 3GS. Because Apple released an iPhone
4 for Verizon late in the yearly refresh cycle, well, that was just
another nail in the new-design coffin.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/72726.html

Sony Ericsson Unveils 1 Phone for Adventurers, 1 for Couch Potatoes
Sony Ericsson announced two new Android smartphones Wednesday: the
Xperia Ray and the Xperia Active. Both run Android 2.3, aka
"Gingerbread," and use the Mobile Bravia Engine. They will both be
available in select markets worldwide in the third quarter, Sony
Ericsson said. The Ray appears to be focused on entertainment, while the
ruggedized Active will focus on consumers with an active lifestyle.

Lytro's New Camera: Shoot First, Focus Later
Startup company Lytro has announced what it calls the first light field
camera for everyone. This will let users take photographs, then select
the focal point later. The camera uses light field sensors to capture
the color, intensity and vector direction of all the light rays in a
scene, then uses algorithms to process them and let users change the
focus as desired after taking the shot.

Can Lulz Be Lassoed?
A hacker believed to be involved in high-profile cyberattacks on major
websites including those of the CIA, the U.S. Senate, PBS, the UK's
Serious Organized Crime Agency and Sony was arrested outside London
Tuesday. After the arrest, 19-year-old Ryan Cleary was identified by
authorities as a major player in the attacks, acting as a top-level
member of the hacking organization LulzSec.

Guess What's Coming to Dinner
Beef may often be "what's for dinner" throughout many parts of the
world, but there's no doubt the habit comes at a heavy price. In
addition to taking the lives of 16 billion or so animals each year in
the United States alone -- yes, that's billion -- meat takes a
significant toll on the environment. Roughly 16 pounds of grain and
2,400 gallons of water are required to produce just a single pound of
meat.

Osmo PIM: The Strong, Silent and Incredibly Capable Type
Keeping up to date with multiple calendars, tons of information and
never-ending to-do lists can pose Herculean challenges if one doesn't
have a proper set of tools. An effective way to solve that problem is
with a well-oiled personal information manager. However, it is not
always easy to find a PIM that gives a useful set of components to
handle diverse needs.

Apple Amps Up Productivity With Final Cut Pro X
Video editing pros, get out your wallets. Apple released a new version
of Final Cut Pro on Tuesday. Final Cut Pro X reinvents video editing,
according to Apple. Magnetic Timeline allows users to edit on a flexible
trackless canvas. Content Auto-Analysis categorizes content during
import based on shot type, media and people. The background rendering
feature allows the user to work without interruption.

Nokia N9: A Phone for Geeks Who Wonder What Might Have Been
Nokia has unveiled the first smartphone to run the MeeGo operating
system: the Nokia N9. This new handset is all screen -- it has no home
button. Its 3.9-inch Amoled screen is made from scratch-resistant curved
glass, and the body was precision-machined from a single piece of
polycarbonate. However, the N9's use of the MeeGo OS raises questions
about its viability.

LightSquared Fiddles With Dial to Cut GPS Static
LightSquared is moving forward with its plans to create a faster 4G
wireless network by switching airwaves after tests showed its previous
system interfered with GPS systems, the company announced Monday. The
network innovator will use spectrum controlled by satellite company
Inmarsat. "Inmarsat is operating within approximately 2 megahertz.

Breaches Everywhere: 5 Ways to Soften the Blow When It Happens to You
Is it just me, or does it seem like every day there's another breach to
worry about? RSA, Epsilon, Sony, now Citibank -- it seems like a day
doesn't go by where there isn't another high-profile breach in the news.
It seems like everyone's getting hacked, and it seems like it's
happening with increasing regularity.

Keeping the Desktop Dream Alive: Q&A With Jim Zemlin, Part 2
Where is Linux going? For Part 2 of this interview, LinuxInsider
continued speaking with Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin
to discuss Linux in a wider variety of technologies, new programs
intended to make it easier for businesses to switch to open source
computing, and open source's ability to compete in the consumer mobile
space.

Fanhattan: 4 Channels Cover a Lot
Through its control of iOS and the App Store, Apple's made it incredibly
easy to watch professionally made movies and TV shows on the iPad.
Whether you're buying directly from Apple via iTunes or connecting
through a third-party provider like Netflix or Hulu, there's a large and
growing body of video ready to play at a moment's notice.

Two-Headed Hacker Monster Declares Open Season on Governments
Two ad hoc hacker communities often in the headlines of late -- LulzSec
and Anonymous -- announced on Monday they intend to team up to attack
government websites worldwide. In its "Operation Anti-Security"
manifesto, LulzSec said the top priority of this operation is "to steal
and leak any classified government information, including email spools
and documentation." Anonymous had on Friday tweeted its solidarity with
LulzSec.

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Lulz (14:52 minutes)
In this episode: LulzSec wreaks havoc on the Internet, hacking, leaking
and pwning its way to notoriety; Facebook reportedly musters an army of
Spartan Web apps to do gory battle with Apple on the beaches of iOS,
Apple puts action behind words by petitioning a judge to allow it to
take sides with devs against patent owner Lodsys; privacy groups

Today's Story Highlights

Hackers Hacking Hackers: LulzSec Vows Revenge for Sega Attacks
The hacker community appears to be divided over a break-in suffered last
week by Sega's database. The hack reportedly led to the theft of the
emails, addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords of about 1.3
million members of the Sega Pass online network. This led hacker group
LulzSec, whose victims range from Sony to the FBI and the CIA, to
threaten retribution against the culprits.

Plunderous Malware Makes Off With Bags of BitCoins
A new malware attack aimed at stealing BitCoin wallets is on the loose,
according to information released by security firm Symantec. The attack
has led to reports of at least one theft amounting to approximately
$500,000. BitCoins are a form of virtual currency. The relatively
unregulated method of trading that appeals to so many users comes with a
downside.

Will Facebook Finally Play the Tablet Game?
Fact #1: Facebook's iPhone app is one of that platform's all-time most
popular applications. Fact #2: Apple's iPad has been on the market for
well over year. Why, then, does Facebook still have no native app
specifically built for the Apple tablet? Perhaps that's soon to change.
Reports emerged Friday that Facebook is indeed working on an iPad app.

HP vs. Oracle: A Perspective on an Ugly Divorce
I know a lot of folks are struggling with what is going on between HP
and Oracle, and I think I have an analogy that works. Imagine, if you
will, what appears to be the perfect couple. They like similar things,
and they each have skills that complement the other's. In other words,
they are more than a couple. They are a team.

Adobe Cuts Off Linux's AIR - 'and Nothing of Value Was Lost'
Well it's been another scorching few days here in the Linux blogosphere,
where summer appears to have set spring on fire and kicked it out the
back door. It's no wonder tempers are running hot, but the latest news
from the gang over at Adobe has done nothing to help. "We will no longer
be releasing our own versions of Adobe AIR and the AIR SDK for desktop
Linux," wrote Adobe blogger Mark Hopper last Tuesday.

Fotopedia's National Park Images Will Leave You Spellbound
Last week I reviewed National Park Maps HD, an excellent app that offers
trail and guide maps to 15 of the most popular U.S. National Parks. If
there's one thing more I wanted in that app, it was photos of some of
the cool sights available, like the Grand Tetons at dusk. As Apple says,
though, there's an app for that, too, and oh boy, is it ever a gorgeous,
joyful delight.
