The Sky-High Expectations Surrounding Mobile Networks (23:34 minutes)
Users today want to be able to access more services using more devices.
They want coordination across all the platforms they use, they want
security and privacy, and they want the full support of their IT
departments. It's all a very tall order, and networks will need to
adjust rapidly or the latency and hassle of access and performance
issues will get in the way of users, their new expectations, and their
behaviors.

Today's Story Highlights

LG to Demo 3D Ultra-Def Behemoth at CES
LG Electronics will show off an 84-inch 3D Ultra Definition TV at the
Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. The world's largest
3D TV will offer 8 million pixels at 3840 x 2160 screen resolution --
four times that of existing full HDTV screens, LG asserted. Features
include 3D Depth Control, 3D Sound Zooming, and Magic Gesture
capability.

Intel Gallops Up Cedar Trail
Intel announced its third-generation Atom mobile processor-based
platform, code-named "Cedar Trail," on Wednesday. It consists of two
dual-core mobile processors, the N2600 and N2800, and two that target
entry-level desktop and other solutions, the D2500 and D2700. The
platform introduces new features such as Intel Wireless Music and Intel
Wireless Display.

Can Apple Convince Me I Want a Smaller TV?
Even before Steve Jobs admitted to his biographer that he had cracked
the modern television nut, Apple fans have long suspected -- and hoped
-- that Apple's little hobby Apple TV set-top box was just a stepping
stone to a bigger and better HDTV living room experience. The latest
rumors throw fuel on the fire: Apple's suppliers reportedly are gearing
up to produce components for delivery of an iTV sometime in 2012.

A Rare Scare Over Linux Security
Security scares are so commonplace in the tech industry today that it's
virtually impossible to keep track of them all. Security scares in the
Linux world, however, are still rare enough as to cause at least a small
collective gasp of consternation. That, indeed, is just what happened
recently when it was discovered that the Kernel.org site had been
breached last month.

Leaked Road Map Offers Glimpse of Future Windows Phones
A road map for the future development of the Windows Phone OS has
apparently been leaked. The new information comes in the wake of a
recent flurry of criticism over Windows Phone's performance in the
smartphone market. The road map is purportedly accurate as of October
2011.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74063.html

Android's Secret Superpowers
As a Sprint corporate customer I'm referred to as "preferred," which
basically translates to "preferred because I give them increasing
amounts of money." Anyway, it gets me a phone upgrade annually, rather
than the non-preferred biannual deal. The only problem with an annually
replaced gadget is you have to figure out how to use it annually too.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74054.html

Clonezilla: A Drive-Duping Monster With a Fearsome Face
Backing up data and restoring a crashed computer are two of those "I
wish I hadda" moments in the life of every computer user. When you
maintain a collection of computers for your job or organization, those
tasks can be critical. One of the fastest and most reliable ways to
restore an afflicted computer is to copy its previously saved image onto
the hard drive.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74056.html

OtterBox Defender: Bulkier, Burlier iPad 2 Armor
When I received my shiny new Apple iPad 2, my first fear was protecting
my new gadget from breaks or scratches. I know the iPad 2 is wicked
strong, but I've also seen tough electronic devices fail in unexpected
ways. So extra-robust protection is a must for me, and a super-
protective case is right for my lifestyle.

Today's Story Highlights

Anonymous Implicated in 'Robin Hood' Hack on Christmas Day
Hackers claiming to belong to the Anonymous hacking community broke into
the servers of private think tank Stratfor over the holiday weekend.
They stole thousands of credit card numbers and other personal
information, and also claim to have stolen the company's list of
confidential clients. This includes organizations such as the United
States Air Force and the Miami Police Department.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74058.html

Chamber Raid: Hackers Target US Commerce Lobby
As the U.S. government continues to pound out proposals for getting its
IT security ducks in a row, it appears it's not the only party in
Washington, D.C., to have a problem with network intrusion. IT systems
belonging to the lobbying group the United States Chamber of Commerce
were breached by hackers using servers located in China, according to a
recent report.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74053.html

Color Me Electric: Researchers Develop Solar Paint
Imagine the paint on your house powering the electric devices inside it.
That's a possible application of some research being conducted at the
University of Notre Dame's Center for Nano Science and Technology. A
team at the center lead by Chemistry and Biochemistry Professor Prashant
Kamat has found a way to create a kind of solar paint that uses
nanoparticles to create energy from light.

The Disasters of 2011
If there was ever a year for train wrecks, 2011 was it. It is that time
when we look back at the screwy decisions executives made last year, and
be thankful that we aren't them. There were a number of career-limiting
moves last year that warrant a top spot on my Bozo meter. HP and Cisco
are contenders, with their Touchpad and Flip flops, but there's another
company more deserving of the crown.

Twitter as Mood Ring: We're in a Funk
A group of mathematicians turned to Twitter to gauge global happiness
for 2011, and it seems the last 12 months have not been humanity's
cheeriest. The team from the University of Vermont gathered 4.6 billion
Twitter messages from Twitter's 33 million users from around the world.

Why Facebook's Finally Getting Religion on the Privacy Issue
Facebook has agreed to improve privacy protections in Europe over the
next six months, after a three-month audit by Ireland's data protection
agency found the social network lacking in some areas. Users will be
given more information about how Facebook and third-party app providers
handle their information, the company promised.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74034.html

Getting Your Video Game Fix Without a Console
Are we about to see the demise of the game console? It's hard to believe
the days of Sony's ubiquitous PlayStation system, introduced in 1994 --
or even those of the Xbox -- may be numbered. But with changing delivery
systems, the spreading cloud, and processor advances, those PlayStations
and Wiis may be going the way of the Walkman.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73984.html

Apple's Juicy 2012 Hardware Harvest
While 2011 was a year full of momentous moments for Apple, 2012 has the
potential to outshine them all, especially in hardware. It will be the
first full year in which Apple must steer its gigantic ship without
Steve Jobs, and the pressure to surprise and delight will be intense.

Microsoft Washes Its Hands of CES
January's Consumer Electronics Show will be the last one Microsoft will
attend. Announcing its decision on Wednesday, Microsoft's Frank Shaw
said the company's product news milestones generally don't align with
the timing of the show, which is regularly held in January.

Today's Story Highlights

Intel Takes Medfield-Powered Phone and Tablet Out for a Spin
Intel is stepping up the drumbeat around its efforts to penetrate the
mobile handheld device market leading up to the 2012 Consumer
Electronics Show, which will be held in Las Vegas in January. The
semiconductor giant recently sent prototype devices, known as "reference
designs," to the MIT Technology Review to try out.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74028.html

New MINE Tools Can Refine Mountains of Data
Massive data sets -- a season's worth of baseball statistics, for
example, or health data from around the world -- can contain some very
revealing knowledge. The problem confronting researchers, though, is
finding it. That may be a little easier with some tools developed by
scientists at Harvard University and the Broad Institute.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74026.html

The 5 Pillars of Master Data Management
In the last three years, corporate views of master data management have
rapidly evolved from data-centric confusion to a point where companies
now focus on the consumers of master data and the business processes
that consume it. In the next two to five years, the companies that use
this MDM momentum will gain a strategic advantage.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74024.html

gDesklets: Semi-Sweet Eye Candy
My interest in desktop eye candy vacillates with the seasons. The added
productivity it brings to a particular desktop design is also a factor.
Now that GNOME 3 forces a desktop without icons, I took a look at how
useful the gDesklets Project might be.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74016.html

Paul Allen Shoots for Low Orbit
Billionaire Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen has started a new company
that will launch payloads into space from a monster aircraft:
Stratolaunch Systems. He has revived his relationship with aerospace
pioneer Burt Rutan to further his plans.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74021.html

IBM's Tech Predictions Prompt Deep Thoughts, Chuckles
IBM looked into its crystal ball and saw five technologies becoming
ubiquitous in the next five years. While IBM spends most of its time,
effort and intelligence in the innards of big organizations, the five
technologies it sees on the horizon are very personal. For example,
we'll be able to use our own motion, as well as motion around us, to
harness energy. IBM imagines extending this concept to running water.

Google May Want an Android Tablet of Its Own
Google may be planning to enter the tablet market in the medium term --
and not just as a partner in an OEM relationship. Eric Schmidt, Google's
executive chairman, told an Italian newspaper that "in the next six
months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality." However, the
remark suggests that it will be Google's own tablet that the company
will be marketing.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74014.html

HTC: If Thine Feature Offends Thee, Pluck It Out
The United States International Trade Commission has ruled that
Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC violated an Apple patent under Section
337 of the U.S. Tariff Act of 1930. It has issued a limited exclusion
order that will take effect in April prohibiting the importation "of
infringing personal data and mobile communication devices and related
software."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74018.html

Security Legislation: A Rat's Nest of Agendas
The United States government launched initiatives this past week to
enhance cybersecurity, but these efforts may add to the confusion around
the issue in federal government circles. One development involves the
unveiling of the Promoting and Enhancing Cybersecurity and Information
Sharing Effectiveness Act by the U.S. House of Representatives' Homeland
Security Committee.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74009.html

Can Amazon Save Android From Malware Hell?
As Android continues its breathtaking rate of growth, malware directed
at the platform is keeping pace. Studies from McAfee and other antivirus
software providers warn that Android is a breeding ground for malicious
software. Google has come under fire as a result.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74010.html

DSLR How-To App Is Kind to Newbies
Every year around this time, droves of pocket-cam photogs are turned
into newly minted DSLR users. If someone in your life is generous
enough to give you one of these relatively large, complex cameras during
the holidays, and if you've never had a chance to use one very
extensively before, then the dozens of new features and controls at your
fingertips might be a little confusing.

Verizon and Google Enter Holiday Party Late and Sulky (12:17 minutes)
In this episode: Verizon's Galaxy Nexus arrives in the U.S. at an odd
moment in the holiday retail season; webOS is released from HP's dungeon
and sent to freely roam the world of open source; Microsoft and Nokia
pick the unassuming Lumia 710 as the first Nokia Windows Phone handset
to arrive in the U.S.; AT&T's bid to acquire T-Mobile starts to cool
off; the U.S. NTSB calls for a nationwide ban on using most personal
gadgets -- including headsets -- while driving.

http://www.ecommercetimes.com/shared/audio/ect-recap-2011-12-16.mp3

Today's Story Highlights

Google's Zeitgeist: Don't Dig Too Deep for Meaning
If Google's Zeitgeist 2011 -- the company's 11th annual list of the most
popular and fastest-rising Internet searches -- truly reflects the
spirit of the times, then we must be living in a world of whiffle heads.
The top search term was "Rebecca Black." The Web celeb was the No. 1
fastest-rising query globally.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74007.html

Apple Gears Up to Create a Star TV
Apple is holding talks with media executives to discuss the future of
television, according to a recent report. It's also allegedly working on
providing wireless streaming capabilities, voice and motion controls,
and features that enable the sharing of content across multiple devices.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74008.html

Timeline's Coming - Better Tidy Up
Facebook recently began rolling out its Timeline feature, which will
replace the social networking site's traditional user profile.
Everything ever posted on a user's page will be included in Timeline.
Members have seven days to review everything that appears on their
Timelines before anyone else can see them, and Facebook lets them mark
which items they want to keep private.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74003.html

How Apple Promoted Samsung's Galaxy Tab and Other Weird Tales
Christmas is coming in a few days, and many of you are kicking back with
some eggnog for a well-deserved rest before the day arrives, and you are
looking forward to the annual family who-is-the-biggest-ass competition.
Yes, this is the time of year when relatives feel the need to overimbibe
and tell us how we should live our lives, and we, unfortunately, are
likely to do the same.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73985.html

WebOS: Destined to Fail, or Fuel for FLOSS' Fire?
After such a tempestuous year as 2011 has been, it's hard to imagine a
more dramatic way for it to go out with a "bang" than with HP's recent
announcement about webOS. Yes, for those who missed it, HP finally ended
months of indecision by announcing that it plans to open-source the
Linux-based mobile operating system, thereby giving it a chance at a new
life in the hands of the community.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74004.html

Outlook Web Email Has Its Points but Lacks Refinement
Many iPhone owners bought their iPhones for personal use, then realized
they wanted or needed to connect to their work-related email, which is
often based on the enterprise-focused Microsoft Exchange mail server.
The PC client application is usually Outlook, and many companies offer
their employees browser-based access via the Web.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73998.html

Judge Invokes 1st Amendment, 'Twitter Stalker' Free to Tweet
A federal judge has dismissed a criminal case against a man accused of
using Twitter to conduct a threatening campaign against a religious
leader. William Lawrence Cassidy had been jailed for predicting that
violence would befall Alyce Zeoli, a Buddhist religious leader, and for
urging her to kill herself. The judge said that Cassidy was protected by
the First Amendment.

Today's Story Highlights

Google Patents Driverless Car Tech for Sliding Through Tight Spots
Google has been awarded a United States patent for what, in legalese, is
"transitioning a mixed-mode vehicle to autonomous mode" -- essentially a
self-driving car. To be more precise, U.S. Patent 8,078,349 covers a car
being driven by a human that transitions to being autonomously driven.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73995.html

Power Grid Cybersecurity: Who's In Charge?
Cybersecurity experts have been murmuring for some time that the United
States' power supply is open to cyberattacks. "If someone were to think
about attacking another nation, the first thing they'd do is take out
the power grid, since it's the hub around which other infrastructure
spokes revolve," said Patrick Miller, president and CEO of NESCO.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73991.html

Hacking the Google TV Box Without Rooting It, Part 3
Last month, I succumbed to a peculiar urge to go out to my local,
friendly big-box consumer electronics retailer and drop almost a hundred
dollars on a product that had been panned by the critics on launch, had
a dubious life expectancy because of that, and had been almost
universally rejected by the TV networks and their agents -- Hulu, for
one.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73992.html

Timeline: Pretty Interface, Ugly Rollout
Facebook will be disrupting the online lives of its members in the
coming weeks with the redesign of their profile pages. The redesign,
called "Timeline," has been available on a limited basis since it was
announced in September, but Thursday the social network announced a
system-wide rollout of the redesign.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73989.html

Galaxy Nexus: Better Late Than Never
Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, the first phone to run Android Ice Cream
Sandwich, will be available in the U.S. starting Thursday from Verizon.
The 4G LTE phone sells for $299.99 with a two-year plan. The device
launched in Hong Kong and Europe three weeks ago and Wednesday in
Australia, but the timing of the phone's U.S. launch puts it on sale
right in the thick of holiday shopping madness.

Strong Medicine for Complex IT Security Maladies (29:47 minutes)
The number of attacks on enterprise systems continues to climb, as does
the cost of protecting those systems. The path to reducing risk, even as
threats escalate, is to confront security at the framework and strategic
level. The point solutions approach must be harnessed into a managed and
ongoing security enhancement lifecycle.

Today's Story Highlights

Auto Updates Nudge IE Users Into the Present
Microsoft will automatically upgrade earlier versions of its Internet
Explorer browser beginning in January. The updates will be for PCs
running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, Redmond said. Users in
Australia and Brazil who have turned on the automatic update feature in
Windows Update will be the first to have their browsers automatically
updated, and Microsoft will roll out this capability elsewhere over
time.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73987.html

Tracking Friends and Family on the Legit
Facebook's recent acquisition of location-tracker heavyweight Gowalla is
an indicator of the potential strategic importance of location-tracking
technology in the social network arena. Players in this marketplace
include Gowalla, which lets users share favorite places with fellow
Facebook and Twitter friends and then be rewarded with deals from local
businesses, and Foursquare, which offers similar functions.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73978.html

2011's Most Momentous Moments for Apple
2011 was a big year for Apple fans. Maybe not as big as the introduction
of the iPhone or iPad, but a lot of amazing things happened, and the
company gathered an astounding amount of momentum. Of course, 2011 was
also the year Apple CEO Steve Jobs died.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73981.html

2011's Tribulations and Triumphs for FOSS
Well December is halfway over for another year, and that means 2011 is
drawing to a close. It's been a tempestuous year, most would surely
agree, and one that wrought momentous change in this already fast-paced
industry of ours. Which were the biggest, most monumental events here in
the world of FOSS, you ask? Ask four different Linux bloggers and you'll
get four different answers.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73979.html

Fireworks Conspicuously Absent as Nokia's Lumia Makes US Debut
Nokia and T-Mobile jointly announced on Wednesday the coming of the
first Nokia Windows Phone smartphone in the United States. The Nokia
Lumia 710 will be available starting Jan. 11 at for $50 with a two-year
contract after a mail-in rebate. It will run on T-Mobile's 4G network.
