The Automation Revelation (21:39 minutes)
UK managed service provider InTechnology says it's reaped tremendous
benefits from an automated lifecycle approach. "When you've got like 80
percent of all incidents raised automatically, it takes a massive burden
off the 24/7 teams and the customer support guys, who are not spending
the majority of their time creating incidents but actually working to
resolve them," said InTechnology's Ed Jackson.

Today's Story Highlights

Will Samsung's Ugly Duckling Become a Swan?
Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note, which sports a 5.3-inch screen --
a size that places it between a typical smartphone and a tablet. It
features an HD Super AMOLED display with a 180-degree viewing angle. The
device comes with a slide-out stylus called the "S Pen" and sports an 8-
MP rear camera and a 2-MP front camera for video chat.

US Travelers Abroad: Don't Get Gouged by Stiff Data Roaming Fees
Travel tools for the road include some of the killer apps that have
driven the smartphone market, like mapping. However, the ball and chain
is the cost of getting that data outside of your home market. For
example, U.S. carrier Sprint currently charges a whopping $19.45 per
megabyte to use its GSM data roaming agreements in Europe.

A Tale of Two Licenses
Well the wild ride that was August appears to have tapered off a bit as
the month drew to a close, so Linux bloggers have finally had a few days
to stop and catch their breath. Bartenders throughout the blogosphere
have had a chance to restock their supplies, and conversations have, for
the most part, returned to normal volumes. There's one exception,
however.

The Perils of 'Social Divide' Thinking
Dreamforce's two-and-a-half hour keynote on Wednesday featured plenty of
technology talk, and technology is neat -- don't get me wrong. The art
and science of managing customer relationships would be lost without it.
But one thing Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said early on really stuck in
my head. He said that the idea of a digital divide was no longer the
issue. It was the idea of a social divide.

Goodbye TV Show Rentals - and Goodbye External Hard Drives
My unhappiness with Apple's decision to cancel iTunes TV show rentals
for 99 cents led me to get a glimpse of Apple's new iCloud-related
world. As it was widely reported, Apple decided to ditch the rental
program because consumers overwhelmingly prefer to buy their TV shows. I
don't have the data in front of me, but I can't say I believe Apple on
this one.
