Podcast
Hybridizing the Cloud (21:40 minutes)
Specialized hybrid clouds can often address a particular industry's
needs more comfortably than one-size-fits-all services. Sometimes these
can turn into sources of new business. For many companies, "maintaining
their own infrastructure is not a competitive advantage for them," said
NYSE Euronext's Steve Rubinow. "It's really a cost of doing business
like telephones and office furniture."

Today's Story Highlights

Behind the Pay Wall, Part 1: Fan Sites Play Ball
The University of Florida coaching staff was short on selling points
when it set out to recruit high school football players in early 1990.
For starters, the head coach was brand new, his predecessor having been
unceremoniously dismissed in the middle of the '89 season because of
rule infractions. What's more, one of the best players in school
history, Emmitt Smith, decided to forgo the 1990 season and enter the
NFL.

FSF's Star Turn in the Android FUDathon, Part 2
Mr. Smith was kind enough to reply two days later: "Hi Barbara, Thanks
for your feedback. I've responded to some your specific points below.
I'm aware that a license change in Linux would require significant
effort. However, that doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be done. I wish
it was easier for them, but we think they stand to benefit from
upgrading even in this current situation. ..."

BleachBit Leaves Your File System Sparkling and Grime-Free
One of the most essential computer maintenance tasks is pruning outdated
and orphaned files from the deep, dark dungeons within the Linux filing
system. These disconnected scraps and bits are endemic to the file
structure in any operating system, Linux included. Weeding the Linux
software garden is not something that typical users do often enough.

The Magic of QR Codes
You might have seen them without knowing what they are: little black and
white boxes with squiggles and lines in the corner of a magazine
advertisement, on a band's poster in a coffeeshop, or even on a T-shirt.
Those things, called "QR codes," or "quick response codes," are part of
a whole new way of connecting with consumers via their smartphones.

The Big iSleep
News from Apple reads like a mystery novel over the past week. It all
started with the apparent loss of an iPhone prototype in a San Francisco
bar. That scenario may sound familiar. Last year, the gadget site
Gizmodo made headlines by obtaining an iPhone 4 prototype after an Apple
employee left the test model in another Bay Area bar. The police were
eventually involved.
