Hybridizing the Cloud (21:40 minutes)
Specialized hybrid clouds can often address a particular industry's
needs more comfortably than one-size-fits-all services. Sometimes these
can turn into sources of new business. For many companies, "maintaining
their own infrastructure is not a competitive advantage for them," said
NYSE Euronext's Steve Rubinow. "It's really a cost of doing business
like telephones and office furniture."

Today's Story Highlights

Amazon Redesign: Limbering Up for Tablet Action?
The next time you make a shopping trip to Amazon.com, you may be in for
a surprise. The Net's largest retailer will be rolling out significant
design changes to its online store -- changes that some say make the
site more tablet friendly. The new design is airier than the old one.
There's more white space on the home page.

Behind the Pay Wall, Part 2: You Gotta Have a Gimmick
If recruiting followed porn's lead into the world of 900 numbers, it did
the same on the Internet. Porn was among the first and most successful
industries to charge for content online, supplying a different type of
fix for an equally zealous audience. However, like so many others, the
porn industry's ability to charge for content has eroded over time. News
is another commodity that people have been devoutly unwilling to pay
for.

FSF's Star Turn in the Android FUDathon, Part 3
Where did this "you are permanently barred from distributing" stuff
originate? In digging around, I found a post titled "A Practical Guide
to GPL Compliance" at the Software Freedom Law Center dated August 26,
2008, written by the team of Bradley M. Kuhn, Aaron Williamson and Karen
M. Sandler.

The iPad's Powerful Academic Potential
My gut response when I heard that some school districts are rolling out
iPads to elementary, middle and high school kids was, "Wow, lucky little
goobers." And that reaction was quickly followed by, "Wait a minute,
iPads ? What's wrong with a good old fashioned textbook? Are schools
going to start showing 30-second video clips as a teaching method now?"

Which Linux Distro Leads the Pack?
Between Googlerola, the tempestuous software patent storm, HP's
shenanigans and the one-two punch delivered by CmdrTaco and Steve Jobs,
we've surely displayed all the stamina any group of completely
overwhelmed souls could reasonably be expected to have. Time now for a
little fun. And how do Linux bloggers have fun? That's right, by
engaging in a little high-spirited debate.

Overachievement May Be Droid Bionic's Achilles' Heel
Eight months after Verizon Wireless showed off the prototype for the
Droid Bionic, it is finally coming to market. The device is among the
handful of phones that will run on the 4G LTE network that Verizon is
rolling out this year -- and the carrier's first to sport a dual-core
processor. If that makes it sound fast, that's because it is, said
Verizon Wireless national spokersperson Brenda Ranei.
