Make Room for the Enterprise App Store (25:27 minutes)
With mobile devices like smartphones and tablets in their hands at all
hours, workforces are becoming more mobile and more powerful. However,
those devices have also caused enterprise IT leaders much dread due to
the problems involved with supporting them all. Making room for an
enterprise app store may be part of a better mobile management strategy.

Today's Story Highlights

The Pentagon, Contractors and Hackers: Who Protects the Protectors?
The United States Department of Defense is reportedly extending its
Defense Industrial Base Cyber Pilot program, first announced by deputy
defense secretary William Lynn in June, to defense contractors. Under
this program, the DoD, together with the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security, will share classified information and information on how to
use it with defense contractors.

The Mystery of the Missing iPad Parts
Apple reportedly has scaled back orders for iPad parts -- possibly by as
much as 25 percent for the fourth quarter. There is a good deal of
skepticism about the report's accuracy, though, along with plenty of
conjectures that could explain the change, from the mundane
(geographical redistribution) to the sublime (design changes in the
works).

MadPad HD: The Sound of Silliness
Smule is a company known for turning iThings into musical gizmos. Its
"Ocarina" app was the first time I'd seen a phone act as a virtual wind
instrument. Its "Leaf Trombone" wasn't quite as enthralling in my
estimation. But I loved "I Am T-Pain" for its quick and easy approach to
autotune. Smule has recently also updated its sound sampler for iPad,
which it calls "MadPad HD."

That Was the Breach That Was
A series of intrusions into the heart of the Linux Kernel.org servers in
late August that went undetected for some 17 days is still shrouded in
mystery. If Linux developers know how the breach occurred, they are not
saying. They also are keeping mum on the extent of any damage the break-
in caused.

OnStar's Plan to Keep Tabs on Ex-Customers Riles Lawmakers
OnStar recently raised hackles in the privacy community with revisions
to its privacy policy. Now, members of Congress have taken up the issue.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has asked the Federal Trade Commission to
investigate the new policy on the grounds that it may be an unfair or
deceptive trade practice. The company's new terms are "one of the most
brazen invasions of privacy in recent memory," he charged.
