Podcast
Singing in the Rain: How the Cloud Can Pour Down Money (20:19 minutes)
No single type of cloud is appropriate for every business. All companies
must transition themselves into a new cloud deployment in their own
ways. The goal, of course, is bottom-line savings, and when the
operation is done right, those savings are very real. That's what
cosmetics company Revlon learned as it implemented its private cloud,
which it claims has saved it in the neighborhood of $70 million.

Today's Story Highlights

Gamers PWN AIDS-Related Molecular Mystery
A team of players of an online game called "Foldit" took three weeks to
solve a problem in AIDS research that has puzzled scientists for years.
The problem was to solve the crystal structure of M-PMV retroviral
protease. The M-PMV retrovirus enables the HIV-1 virus to replicate. The
team of "Foldit" players created a model of the protease that was good
enough to let researchers determine its structure.

Storm of Controversy Bedevils NASA's New Deep Space Program
Struggling through a welter of controversy, the U.S. National
Aeronautics and Space Administration this week announced plans for a new
deep space exploration program. At the heart of the Space Launch System
is development of an advanced heavy-lift launch vehicle that will enable
human exploration in space.

Windows 8: Ballmer's Vindication or Damnation
Carol Bartz recently showcased what happens to CEOs who don't meet
expectations -- and, given Yahoo's board may be fired as well, what can
happen if a board acts too slowly. Steve Ballmer has been under fire for
some time for underperforming as CEO, but one hit could change him from
bozo to star if it is big enough, and Windows 8 is big enough.

Does Windows 8 Pose a Threat to Linux?
Well it was a difficult week for those of us here in the Linux
blogosphere last week, what with all the din emanating from the Windows
territories to the south. Drums, cymbals and fanfare of every sort
effectively drowned out every conversation we tried to have here in
these parts, as did all the frantic chanting. It was a relief when the
week finally wound down and we could all begin speaking at normal
volumes again.

Mactracker Faithfully Pins Down Apple Product Specs
If you've ever wanted to track down the specifications of a particular
Apple product, you can eventually find them through the company's online
support pages. However, there's a better way than drilling down through
Apple's site or searching until you find the right document that refers
to the Mac in front of you: Mactracker, a free app for Mac OS X
available through the Mac App Store.

FTC: Mobile Apps Privacy Protection Not Just for Kids
Providers of apps for mobile devices are just as responsible as other
electronic commerce vendors in terms of protecting the privacy of
customers. In a recent enforcement action, the Federal Trade Commission
signaled that mobile apps fall within the agency's jurisdiction, and
that it will not hesitate to investigate potential privacy violations
associated with mobile apps.
