Today's Story Highlights

Amid Shrinking Market Share, Apple's 2014 Challenges Loom Large
In my mind, 2014 is shaping up to be Apple's wildest year in the post-
Jobs era. Last year, we saw a lot of incremental innovations from Apple
but no thunderous new products. Sure, the new Mac Pro is insanely small,
quiet and super sexy -- not to mention manufactured in America, which is
no small feat these days -- but it's also a niche product for
professionals.

France Finally Levies Teeny Fine Against Google
Privacy regulators in France have slapped Google with the maximum fine
allowed by law, confirming both the nation's dissatisfaction with Google
and Europe's need to overhaul its data-privacy penalties. France
followed through on threats made in June and September to fine Google
over its privacy policies, laying down a penalty of roughly $200,000 --
the max fine allowed under EU regulations.

How to Speed Up a Sluggish Android Smartphone
One of the disadvantages of retaining a phone after the expiration of a
two-year contract -- as many of us do -- is that those older phones have
accumulated a few years' worth of digital gunk. They're clogged up like
an aging sewer on the wrong side of town. Just like on a PC, bits of app
and OS code become discombobulated -- orphaned from the parent program.

CrashPlan: A Good - but Not Perfect - Linux Backup Plan
CrashPlan is an automated backup system that does the job, but it's not
without its pitfalls. The software offers a cross-platform backup
solution that's reliably easy to use once you configure the software.
Installing it to your Linux system, however, is anything but user-
friendly. More than a few Linux users will emerge looking for a less-
finicky solution.

RSA Could Pay Dearly for $10M NSA Gig
At least eight security experts who had signed up for the RSA 2014
security conference to be held Feb. 24-28 have publicly pulled out. They
include F-Secure Chief Security Researcher Mikko Hypponen and Taia
Global founder and CEO Jeffrey Carr, who is also founder of the Suits
and Spooks conference. The departures are part of a backlash against the
RSA's reported $10 million deal with the NSA.

Sony Banks On Life Space UX to Regain Faded Glory
"A more robust entertainment delivery system will be a hallmark of Sony
as we move into the future," Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said Tuesday in a
keynote at CES. "We will be offering customers a single source of
entertainment that is less complicated, more cost-effective and more
accessible than ever before." Sony will be taking bold steps with its
future consumer electronics products, Hirai pledged.
