PowerLocker Takes Ransomware to a New Level
Up to now, the malware program CryptoLocker has been king of the
ransomware roost, but PowerLocker may present a new challenge. "It has
some interesting countermeasures to thwart researchers," said Harry
Sverdlove, CTO of Bit9. Among those countermeasures are the ability to
determine if it's running on a virtual machine -- and if so, to alter
its behavior.

Google Apologizes for Hitler Miscue
Google has had its share of headaches in Germany, but this one is new.
Google apologized after Google Maps briefly changed the name of a Berlin
intersection, "Theodor-Heuss-Platz," to its Nazi-era moniker, "Adolf-
Hitler-Platz." Google released a statement explaining that user-
submitted edits for Google Maps are reviewed by Google moderators or
"the community of mapping volunteers."

Retiring in Sanctuary Belize: Renewed Hope
After my Belize retirement update appeared last week, a number of things
happened. Most initially were rather painful, but eventually I was
placed on the phone with Rod Kazazi, the project CFO who is based in the
United States. Since we both had a financial background, he was able to
address most of my concerns by informing me of solid programs that
ensure the project will be completed.

The CES 2014 Hotties List
The Internet of Things, wearables, mobile devices and the next
generation of automobiles were the standouts at CES 2014. "The Internet
of Things will probably have the broadest impact, since it includes
quickly evolving, increasingly intelligent and highly mobile
technologies of every kind," said Charles King, principal analyst at
Pund-IT.

Google Gives Gmail More Pluses
Google on Thursday started rolling out changes designed to further
integrate its Gmail and Google+ platforms. The updates make it easier
for Google+ users to contact other users without knowing their email
addresses. Going forward, when users with both a Gmail and a Google+
account begin typing a contact's name into an email draft, a list of
Google+ contacts will appear along with other contacts.
