Today's Story Highlights

Moment Goes Big on Smartphone Camera Magnification
We love the functionality that comes with smartphone cameras, including
inherent portability, powerful processors, and imaginative post-
processing app solutions. However, what we supremely dislike -- with a
vengeance -- are the little software-driven lenses that phone makers see
fit to slap on the devices. Those horrible cheap lenses can in no way
replicate larger precision ground-glass optics.

Can Android Challenge Embedded Linux?
Is the Android OS morphing into a new form of embedded Linux? Android is
a Linux OS derivative perched to make inroads beyond its growing user
base in smartphones and tablets. Some auto makers are considering the
potential for Android-connected communications systems in their
vehicles. The Android OS is already available as an all-in-one desktop
computer powered by System on a Chip circuitry.

Microsoft Struggles to Get Surface Pro Updates Right
Microsoft is rolling out a fix for a troubled firmware update for
Surface Pro 2. Many of those who installed the December patch saw
battery-life issues and trouble with the sleep and shutdown functions on
the tablets. Some users reported that battery power drained more
quickly, and that their Surface either did not charge fully or did not
show it was actively being charged.

IBM Puts Its Faith in Watson
Pardon the pun, but there's nothing elementary about IBM's Watson
Business Unit. IBM's Watson initiative takes cognitive computing to the
head of the class. IBM last week announced it was committing $1 billion
and 2,000 employees -- as well as its considerable research and
development talents and marketing muscle -- to Watson. This puts the
full weight of the brand behind the new business unit.

Free Streaming: Rdio, Spotify Duke It Out
Rdio announced Thursday that its Web users will have free, unlimited
access to content, an update that came on the heels of similar news from
Spotify. Spotify started offering free streaming music for iOS and
Android mobile devices last month, and on Wednesday announced that it
was eliminating time limits for all of its Web users. Less than a day
after Spotify's update, Rdio followed suit.
