A Standard Is Born (29:23 minutes)
Open Automated Compliance Expert Markup Language is built to automate
security and save costs. "If you think about PCI DSS, it defines pretty
tightly what your cardholder data environment consists of," said The
Open Group's Jim Hietala. "In terms of O-ACEML, it could be networking
devices, servers, storage equipment, or any sort of IT device."

Today's Story Highlights

IBM Makes Brainy Breakthrough in Computing
IBM researchers unveiled a new generation of experimental computer chips
Thursday. The chips are designed to mimic the brain's abilities of
perception, action and cognition. The development could lead to advances
in computers that require much less power and space than current
technology.

Do You Really Know What Your Android Is Capable Of?
As a Sprint corporate customer I'm referred to as "preferred," which
basically translates to "preferred because I give them increasing
amounts of money." Anyway, it gets me a phone upgrade annually, rather
than the non-preferred biannual deal. The only problem with an annually
replaced gadget is you have to figure out how to use it annually too.

Shelter for Linux in the Software Patent Storm
Patents, patents, patents. Such a to-do about software patents! The news
this week has focused on little else, thanks in large part, of course,
to Google's much-discussed purchase of Motorola Mobility. It's fairly
widely agreed that patents were the motivating factor behind that
purchase -- not at all surprising, given the virtual lawsuit-fest the
mobile world has become.

Samsung Ought to Be Embarrassed and Ashamed
Samsung used to be a consumer electronics brand that I appreciated and
admired. I've owned several Samsung products over the years; in fact, I
use one every day. I have a Samsung SyncMaster T240HD 24-inch monitor.
It's a thing of beauty, actually, with a pleasing clear polycarbonate
sort of frame with a touch of deep red layered beneath the clear
plastic-like housing. I love it.

Is Apple Brewing an iPhone Oktoberfest?
Apple has seen a record number of iPhone sales this year, and the
company shows no signs of putting on the brakes -- it allegedly just
upped its order of handset units from 50 million to 56 million,
including orders for the not-officially-announced iPhone 5. The
increased order doesn't seem unrealistic given Cupertino's exponential
iPhone sales growth and strong market performance over the past year.
