Podcast
The Patent World War (12:47 minutes)
In this episode: Apple scores a win against Samsung with an injunction
that blocks the Korean gadget maker from selling the Galaxy Tab in most
European countries; Amazon skirts Apple's iOS in-app sales rules with a
Web app version of its popular Kindle e-reader application; 45,000
employees in Verizon's landline phone business go on strike after
failing to reach an agreement with the telecom over benefit cuts; Nokia
gives up on Symbian smartphones and feature phones in the North American
market, putting all its eggs in Microsoft's basket; confusion is raised
over a video in which someone claiming to represent the hacker group
Anonymous threatens to take down Facebook this November, though other
Anon channels indicate support for this plan is not unanimous among
Anonymous.

Today's Story Highlights

Is InfoSec Ready for Big Data?
Over the past few decades, most IT shops have followed a somewhat
similar trajectory: Starting from a centralized model, computing
resources, much like the cosmological Big Bang, have exploded outwards
to become ever more distributed and decentralized. This makes sense
given market dynamics.

Why Video Conferencing Sucks
I've been covering video conferencing (now often called "telepresence")
products since the late 80s and saw my first offering in the mid-60s as
a child at Disneyland. Over the years, product wave after product wave
has come to market with the promise of the next big thing in
telecommunications only to fail to meet even reasonable expectations for
deployment in a market where users are measured in billions.

Peakfinder: A Primo Panoramic Portfolio of Prominent, Pointy Places
As I drive around the Northwest, I see a lot of mountains. Some are
majestic, rising suddenly out of nowhere after a bend in the highway
reveals their snowy tops etched against a blue sky. These big peaks
usually have well-known names like "Mt. Rainier" or "Mt. Hood." And then
there are mountain ranges, like the Cascades or Rocky Mountains.

Microsoft's 'Linux Threat Level': Down to Green or Redder Than Ever?
Now that Microsoft wants to be Linux's new best friend, there's bound to
be no end of sweet nothings and touching gestures emanating out of
Redmond. After all, we're pals now, right? Lo and behold! For all you
skeptics who doubted the software behemoth's amorous words, consider a
few phrasing changes it recently made in its last two annual financial
filings.

A Standard Is Born
The Open Automated Compliance Expert Markup Language is a new standard
that helps enterprises automate security compliance across their systems
in a consistent and cost-saving manner. O-ACEML not only helps to
achieve compliance with applicable regulations but also achieves major
cost savings. From the compliance audit viewpoint, auditors can carry
out similarly consistent and more capable audits in less time.
