Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft's ZeroAccess Botnet Takedown No 'Mission Accomplished'
Microsoft said last week that it had disrupted the ZeroAccess botnet,
which has been around since 2011. It joined forces with the FBI, the
European Cybercrime Center, and several high-tech companies. Microsoft
also filed suit against various John Does believed to be involved with
the botnet. However, the operators of ZeroAccess have since pushed out
commands to infected PCs on two occasions.

Google's Death Wish
A recurring theme in the technology industry is that very successful
companies become arrogant and start taking unnecessary risks or abusing
customers -- the two aren't mutually exclusive. That behavior can
accomplish what competitors have failed to do: It can kill them. I was
in IBM in the 1980s when it exhibited this behavior, and I wrote a
report on Microsoft identifying this same behavior.

Ecuador Boards the Internet Freedom Train
Ecuador hosted an Internet freedom forum last week, welcoming guests
from the pro-transparency community. The nation's president, Rafael
Correa, is also funding a new research project designed to overhaul
traditional copyright laws. To that end, the FLOK Society, based at a
public university in Quito, is exploring ways to liberate Ecuador's
Internet from global intellectual property laws.

Tweetbot 3 Makes Your Twitter Timeline a Thing of Beauty
Let's get this clear up front: I am not a Twitter expert. I've used
multiple accounts for different purposes; I enjoy following a few
personalities; I like searching through Twitter. Until now, I've rarely
bothered to tweet or mess with Twitter on my iPhone or iPad, preferring
to use the standard browser-based method on my Mac. I know I'm missing
out, though.

MX-1 to Shoot for Moon - and $20 Million
Moon Express on Thursday unveiled the design of its MX-1 robotic
spacecraft to more than 10,000 attendees at the closing session of
Autodesk University in Las Vegas. Moon Express plans to deploy the
unmanned MX-1 to the moon and perhaps capture Google's Lunar XPrize. The
MX-1 will be able to perform a variety of scientific and commercial
functions.
