Today's Story Highlights
Jailbroken Phones Targeted by Hacker Jammers
Smartphones hacked to run unauthorized programs or unlock features are
being targeted by hackers and can pose a threat to enterprise networks,
warned Marble Security. Modifying a smartphone to enable unauthorized
behavior -- called "rooting" in the Android world and "jailbreaking" in
the iOS realm -- makes the mobile vulnerable to infected jammer
software, the firm said.

Norway Dashes Cold Water on Bitcoins
Norway's government ruled that Bitcoins don't qualify as a real
currency, and it will treat them as an asset -- as opposed to a
legitimate currency -- that is subject to capital gains tax. Many
countries have been weighing in on how they will treat Bitcoins. Earlier
this month, China said that its banks and financial institutions
shouldn't handle the digital currency.

What Comes After Greed in Technology?
I just finished reading a very interesting book by Intel Futurist Brian
David Johnson, Humanity in the Machine: What Comes After Greed? At the
book's core is the idea that we eventually will use machines to make our
lives better as opposed to coming up with creative ways to get more
stuff. This seems an appropriate subject for this time of year.

Scotchy Toss 'Anchorman' App Might Be Better After a Shot or 2
One of the best side effects of Apple's app ecosystem is spinoffs -- in
addition to great games and apps for most everything imaginable,
successful franchises can create apps to keep stoking the adoration of
fans. If you haven't noticed the invasion of Duck Dynasty-branded
merchandise in department stores everywhere, you might have stumbled
upon the surprisingly delightful Battle of the Beards app.

A Cybersecurity Strategy for Citizens
The era of Big Data has scary implications for both personal privacy and
national security and puts our society at significant risk. The impact
of a cyberattack on a large financial institution or a security breach
at a government's secure data house, for example, would have dire
consequences. As a result, cybersecurity is one of the greatest
challenges facing the world today.

Ford Steps on the Driverless-Car Gas
Ford has unveiled its Fusion Hybrid Research Vehicle, part of an ongoing
research project on autonomous cars and other assisted driving
technologies that can help lead to safer roads and less traffic
congestion. The research car is part of Ford's plan to help integrate
the automotive and telecommunications industries by putting more
intelligent vehicles and transportation systems on roadways.

NASA May Schedule Spacewalks to Fix ISS Cooling Loop
NASA on Wednesday shut off one of the two external cooling loops on the
International Space Station and has been struggling to fix it since. The
problem appears to be in the flow valve within a pump module. There has
been speculation that the situation could be more serious than NASA has
acknowledged. Some noncritical systems in various nodes and laboratories
have been powered down.

Twitter's Block Backtrack Scores Points
Finding itself at the center of a social media firestorm, Twitter on
Friday acted quickly to placate users who were concerned about changes
it made to its blocking functionality Thursday afternoon. Twitter
effectively turned the block button into a mute function, allowing a
blocked user to follow, retweet, favorite, and publicly share tweets of
the user who had imposed the block.
