Today's Story Highlights

Consumers Can't Stanch Heartbleeding
Consumers can do little to protect themselves from the catastrophic
Heartbleed bug. "Catastrophic is the right word," wrote security guru
Bruce Schneier in his blog this week. "On the scale of 1 to 10, this is
an 11." Heartbleed is an extension of the SSL/TLS protocol used to
encrypt data in transit on the Internet. Heartbleed is used to keep a
secure connection alive.

Sonos Swings Into Google's Playground
A new partnership between Sonos and Google means that users of the
Google Play Music app for Android now can stream music to their Sonos
speakers directly from the app itself. Available in 25 countries, the
new capability effectively eliminates the need to use Sonos' Controller
app as an intermediary. It represents Sonos' first such integration
partnership with a major music streaming service.

CAELinux Is the Ideal Distro for Designing Scientists
CAELinux is a perfect example of the power of open source to tailor the
Linux OS to users' specialized needs. This computer-assisted engineering
distro clearly is not for the vast majority of Linux users, but it
certainly has all the features you would expect in any mature Linux OS
-- and then some. The extra ingredients make CAELinux a unique Linux
distro for engineers and scientists.

Facebook Mixes Up Mobile Messaging
Facebook is ditching the private messaging function in its main mobile
application in favor of having the entire messaging experience take
place inside the dedicated Messenger app. The company launched the
dedicated messaging app on iOS and Android in 2011, and later debuted it
on Windows Phone. Facebook last year redesigned the app to focus on
aiding those who want to be reachable at all times.
