Today's Story Highlights

Technology's Artsy Side
Google Earth sometimes makes mistakes: Freeways look like they are
upside down or waterfalls flow sideways. For engineers or programmers,
these might seem like things to fix. For artists like Clement Valla,
however, they're artistic opportunities. Valla's project Postcards from
Google Earth, for instance, looks at these mistakes and asks not how to
get rid of them, but what they mean.

Chinese Chat App Exposes Kids to Prostitutes
China's massively popular WeChat messaging app has exposed school
students to prostitutes through its "People Nearby" feature, which is
sometimes used by prostitutes as a form of, shall we say, mobile
advertising. A survey among students, conducted in a handful of major
Chinese cities, found that the kids had indeed come across prostitutes'
accounts when firing up the People Nearby function.

How to Protect Your Android Device from Malware
If you're in the majority of Android users, your smartphone or tablet
isn't protected from malware attacks. In fact, Jupiter Research reckons
that a full 80 percent of smartphones are unprotected. Why is that a
problem? The answer is that even if your smartphone hasn't been affected
so far, it likely will be, and that's because of the vast sums of money
motivating criminals.

Flux+Flap Proves iPad Case Design Isn't Dead
Apple's iPad already boasts far more case and stand options than any
other tablet on Earth, and there are plenty of established companies
with dedicated design teams vying to sell you your next iPad case. So
why does an entrepreneur bother diving into the fray? Because most cases
and stands do one thing well -- but not many things well. Still, the
market is flooded.

MAVEN to Search Mars' Atmosphere for Evolutionary Clues
NASA's MAVEN mission is under way following Monday's successful launch
from Cape Canaveral of a spacecraft that will explore Mars' upper
atmosphere and seek answers to questions about the planet's evolution.
The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN, or MAVEN, craft is scheduled
to travel for 10 months and reach Mars in September 2014. MAVEN is the
first mission targeting Mars' upper atmosphere.

Panono Throws Photography for a Loop
Here's a new take on the point-and-shoot camera: It's the throw-and-
catch camera. Called "Panono," this throwable, panoramic device contains
multiple fixed-focus cameras that shoot simultaneously, allowing you to
capture "everything in every direction," in the words of its creators,
who are now seeking funding on Indiegogo. Toss the ball-like device into
the air and it captures the 360-degree spherical scene.

Qualcomm's Toq Takes a Place in the Sun
Qualcomm on Monday announced its Toq smartwatch will be available on
Dec. 2 for $350. The Toq is compatible with Android-powered smartphones.
Wearers can accept or reject phone calls and view text messages and
other notifications via a Bluetooth connection. Perhaps of greatest
interest, the Toq incorporates Qualcomm's Mirasol display technology,
which makes it easier to see in direct sunlight.
