Cloud Efficiency: Different Paths, Same Destination (24:37)
Aggressive use of cloud-computing strategies can significantly improve
delivery of applications to end users. Healthcare patient-experience
improvement provider Press Ganey and project and portfolio management
provider Planview are both exploiting cloud efficiencies and agility.
Their paths have been different, but the outcomes speak volumes for how
cloud transforms businesses.

Today's Story Highlights

97 Percent of Company Mobile Apps Are Insecure
Mobile apps for consumers have been criticized for gathering more
information from users' devices than they need. It seems, however, that
mobile apps from companies fare no better. Ninety-seven percent of some
2,000 mobile apps produced by 600 companies accessed at least one
private information source on the device they were installed on,
according to a report released Monday by HP.

Baseball Simulation App Hits One Out of the Park
With the Major League Baseball season over, some fans of the American
national pastime have started to suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Others
are hashing over the past season and mulling the next in Hot Stove
Leagues. Out Of The Park baseball should bring a smile to both these
groups of diamond followers. The baseball simulation game lets a
baseball fan experience the game from outside the lines.

UK Gets Google, Microsoft to Step Up Online Child Porn Fight
Google and Microsoft have ramped up their efforts to fight online child
porn following months of pressure by the office of UK Prime Minister
James Cameron. The two have created a blacklist of search terms for
which results will be blocked. When Cameron asked Google and Microsoft
to create such a system in July, the companies told him blocking search
results could not and should not be done.

Microchips May Haunt Tombstone Thieves
A private company in South Africa has created "Memorial Alert," a
microchip-based technology designed to thwart tombstone robberies. There
recently has been a spate of these crimes in Johannesburg. The microchip
is inserted into a memorial. When it is disturbed, it will sound an
alarm and send a text message to relatives and integrated security
companies.

How Amazon - Not IBM - Will Kill AWS
I went public last week with my opinion that IBM eventually will beat
Amazon Web Services, even though Amazon won the first skirmish. I was
referring only to the federal government, not the largely user-based
market Amazon currently serves, but I wasn't clear. One of the tweets
taking me to task said something like "you did what lazy stock analysts
do and used the past to predict the future."

Oceanhorn Taps Zelda's Goodness in All-New iOS Adventure
Oceanhorn is a delightfully odd adventure game for iOS, at once fresh
and yet heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda , a classic title from
the days when Nintendo ruled video gaming. Beyond evoking fond memories
of exploring a wide open land while trying to save a princess, Oceanhorn
is interesting because it's on iOS. Success? Definitely. It's a fun
diversion.

Graphene: Have Strength and Conductivity, Will Transform
A developing technology using an ultra-thin layer of carbon atoms
arranged in a honeycomb structure could start revolutionizing consumer
electronics and many other industries in less than five years. Known as
"graphene," the material's special strength and conductivity make it an
ideal component of super-fast, very sensitive and low-cost devices.

PlayStation 4 Launch Dampened by Dearth of Hot Games
Sony's first new console in seven years, the PlayStation 4, hit the
market Friday, but the launch was not without its glitches. Among the
reported hardware problems were some complete failures. Less
catastrophic, some systems would not output a signal through HDMI. Some
issues cropped up following installation of the Day 1 patch, intended to
offer additional functionality.
