Where Have All the Forests Gone? (14:00)
Earlier this month, researchers published a report discussing global
forest coverage, and supplementing their findings was a first-of-its-
kind interactive
mapping tool that was created in partnership with Google. In this
TechNewsWorld podcast, we discuss the research with the study's lead
author, Matthew Hansen.

Today's Story Highlights

Potential for Abuse Stalls Cellphone Kill Switch Debate
Law enforcement officials and mobile phone makers last week knocked
heads with wireless carriers over planting "kill switches" in
smartphones. Led by San Francisco's DA and New York's AG, law
enforcement wants smartphones to contain firmware that allows a consumer
to "brick" a mobile that's lost or stolen. The largest mobile phone
maker in the world, Samsung, is on board with the program.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79514.html

China Targets Qualcomm With Antitrust Probe
Perhaps to celebrate the anniversary of last year's U.S.-China telecoms
showdown, Beijing has launched an antitrust probe into U.S. chipmaker
Qualcomm. The announcement comes on the heels of comments from Qualcomm
CEO Paul Jacobs that the company was "definitely seeing
increased pressure" in China, in part because of ongoing NSA
revelations.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79515.html

Kubo Electric Scooter Packs Cargo Space Into a Sleek Ride
Kubo is a cargo-carrying electric scooter now seeking crowdfunding on
Kickstarter that offers potential far beyond the realm of personal
transportation. Ask any e-commerce analyst what the hottest upcoming
trend will be in e-commerce circles next year -- the Amazons and eBays
of this world -- and you're likely to get the same answer: Same-day or
even same-hour delivery.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79511.html

MacBooster Can Help Keep Your Mac Humming
Surf over to the Mac App Store, and you'll find plenty of utilities for
keeping your Apple personal computer in tip-top shape. There are tools
for freeing up RAM and cleaning files from disks and thoroughly
uninstalling apps. Have you ever wished, however, that you had a an app
to perform all those tasks under the same hood? IObit is doing that with
MacBooster.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79512.html

A Tale of Two Browsers: Chrome v. Chromium
If you've ever used Google's free Chrome browser, you may be
aware that it's closely related to another, similarly named Google
project called "Chromium." Chrome and Chromium share a heavy portion of
their core browser code, but Chrome is a proprietary Google product,
while Chromium is open source. Both serve Linux, Windows and Mac OS X
platforms, however.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79510.html

Jellyfish-Bot Swims Through the Air
NYU researchers have designed a flying machine that appears to use the
same pulsating motions as a jellyfish. They wanted to create a small
robot that could serve practical purposes such as monitoring traffic.
The device has four wings arranged like flower petals, which pulsate up
and down. Its tiny motor is tethered to a power cord. It can fly and
hover.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79504.html

Samsung Gussies Up Phablet Line With Galaxy Grand 2
Samsung has unveiled the latest model in its line of phablets, the
Galaxy Grand 2, bearing a string of enhancements over its predecessor.
The company's latest device has a 5.25-inch screen with a 16:9 ratio.
The TFT screen is 0.25 inches larger than the previous model and has a
1280 x 720 resolution, compared with the 800 x 480 pixels of the Galaxy
Grand's WVGA screen.

study's lead author, geographer Matthew Hansen.

Today's Story Highlights

Apple, Microsoft and the Innovation Delusion
I got a note from a guy a few days ago who said he had an idea that
would transform Microsoft, and he wanted me to introduce him to Bill
Gates. I don't do that, but it got me thinking. Given that both Apple
and Microsoft are based on ideas that came from outside, there is irony
in the fact that both firms now have a massive wall between them and
outside ideas.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79500.html

German Worker Strike Threatens Amazon's Holiday Cheer
Workers at Amazon in Germany are striking yet again in an effort to coax
the company into better pay and conditions. Hundreds of workers at two
Amazon centers, one in Bad Hersfeld and one in Leipzig, walked out on
Monday. At the heart of the strikes -- there have been a handful of
short strikes by Amazon workers in Germany this year -- is Amazon's
classification of itself as a logistics company.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79507.html

The Graying of the Linux Kernel Community
There are few things more gratifying to those of us here in the Linux
blogosphere than seeing another user give the proprietary world the boot
and make the switch to our favorite operating system. If anything can
come close, however, it would be the birth of a new forum for advocating
for Linux. So let the trumpets sound! This month has brought news of
just that: Linux Voice.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79448.html

Clumsy Ninja May Tug Your Heartstrings
NaturalMotion first wowed Apple fans at last year's September Apple
event with a tantalizing demo of a new game, Clumsy Ninja , which was
teased to hit iOS sometime during the 2012 holiday season. Santa came
and went, and no little kids played Clumsy Ninja. And then boom, Apple
reveals Clumsy Ninja as an Editor's Choice app in the iTunes App Store
with, get this, a video trailer.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79501.html

Neptune Promises Out-of-This-World Smartwatch
Neptune Computer, founded by 19-year-old Simon Tian, has raised more
than CA$250,000 since launching a 33-day Kickstarter campaign for its
Neptune Pine smartwatch on Monday with a target of $100,000. The first
prototypes have already been produced, and all parts of the design and
engineering phase have been finalized. Mass manufacturing is scheduled
to begin in early December.

Today's Story Highlights

Water-Resistance Breakthrough Makes a Splash
Scientists may have just created the most water-resistant artificial
material in the world. Many of those who study hydrophobic materials --
water-repellant surfaces in both nature and laboratories -- had found
themselves at an impasse with a theoretical limit on the amount of time
it takes for water to rebound from a surface. However, a team of
researchers have achieved a breakthrough.

All Things Appy: Top 5 Language Tools for Firefox
In this week's All Things Appy, we take a look at the top five free
tools for Firefox that will help you navigate the polyglot world. The
PC-based browser is well-suited to languages, and in this week's piece
we recommend the best pop-up dictionary along with a multilanguage
search tool and highly efficient translator engines that are superior to
hard-copy dictionaries.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79488.html

GoToMyPC for Android Shines With Striking Simplicity
If you've had any technical support dealings recently, you may have
experienced the wonders of a tech agent taking over your PC remotely --
with your permission -- and running ghostly commands and installs using
remote-access software. I saw this first-hand recently when a Microsoft
support engineer had to repair a failed Office installation on a machine
of mine.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79487.html

Internet of Things Will Burn Privacy for a While, Cerf Warns
"Privacy may actually be an anomaly," Vinton Cerf, one of the fathers of
the Internet, told participants in an FTC workshop on privacy and
security in the Internet of Things. Privacy doesn't really exist in
small towns, for instance. Further, consumers' social behavior is "quite
damaging to privacy," Cerf said. "The technology we use today has far
outraced our social intuition headlights."

Instagram, Waze Bring Windows Phone Out of App Dark Ages
Instagram and Waze became available Wednesday at the Windows Phone
Apps+Games store -- the latest popular titles to join the expanding
platform. Facebook-owned Instagram allows users to enhance and add
filters to their photos and then share them with fellow Instagram users.
Google-owned Waze uses real-time data provided by its users to update
drivers on traffic conditions.

Today's Story Highlights

How to Make Windows 8 Look Like Win 7 on Your PC
Windows 8's blah reception from many computer users may have been due at
least in part to a peculiar trait that we humans have, and that's our
obsession with improvement. Improving our lot has been a fixation
throughout virtually all of human history, so it shouldn't come as any
great surprise that Microsoft couldn't help itself when it became time
to update its OS.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79480.html

Aussie Police Investigate Facebook Pot Peddler
Australian police are investigating an Aussie who is openly advertising
and, presumably, selling marijuana on Facebook. The dealer, who operates
under the pseudonym "Rick Kush Dispenser," has posted advertisements for
multiple strains of marijuana on a "swap and sell" Facebook page that is
generally used for clothes, children's toys and electronics.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79486.html

The Yay! and Uh-Oh Reasons for Slowing Mac Sales
There's been some concern over the last year or so over slowing Mac
sales. Instead of selling at wildly better rates than the constricting
PC industry, Macs have been languishing. Of course, at the same time
iPad and iPhone sales have been skyrocketing, so it's not hard to point
a finger at iPads as a reason. Makes sense. iPads hold a heckuva lot of
computing power inside their one-piece slab.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79483.html

Task Coach Keeps You on Target and in Control
Attention to detail is often the missing feature that separates really
useful to-do managers from the mundane list-tracking options. Task Coach
goes out of its way to help you keep track of the details. The latest
version of Task Coach -- version 1.3.33-1 -- does a good job of
servicing two categories, in fact. It is both a personal task tracker
and a to-do manager.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79472.html

US Carriers Nix Samsung's Smartphone Kill Switch
U.S. wireless carriers have rejected Samsung's proposal to preload theft
deterrent software on its phones, said San Francisco District Attorney
George Gascón. Samsung wanted to preload Lojack for Android, which could
brick phones and thus eliminate their value in the secondary market,
"but only if it was made standard on all devices," Gascón continued.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79479.html

Xbox One Party's On
Just one week after its biggest rival hit the market, Microsoft's new
console, the Xbox One, will go on sale with a series of splashy events
to mark the launch. From the stroke of midnight on Nov. 22, a new war
will be under way. While Sony is focusing on game play with the
PlayStation 4, Microsoft is pitching the Xbox One as a home
entertainment hub.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79478.html

Logitech Outfits iPhone for Gaming Control
Logitech on Wednesday introduced its new PowerShell Controller +
Battery, a device that's designed to turn users' iPhones into gaming
consoles. Compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and fifth-generation iPod
touch devices running iOS 7, the PowerShell offers analog off-screen
controls along with a battery pack for $99.99. It is now available.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/79471.html

Musk Heaps Fuel on Tesla Model S Fire
The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last
week launched a probe of the safety of the Tesla Model S automobile. The
investigation "was prompted by recent incidents in Washington State and
Tennessee that resulted in battery fires due to undercarriage strikes
with roadway debris," said agency spokesperson Kathryn Henry.
