Would You Let Your Data Sleep Over at Google's House? (13:03 minutes)
In this episode: Google unveils Google Drive, a free data storage
service, though its ToS makes privacy advocates do a double-take; Google
and Oracle land blows against each other during their second week of
courtroom testimony; patent alliances become tangled as Facebook buys IP
that Microsoft just picked up from AOL; the FBI marks July 9 as the date
it'll pull the plug on a server operation, potentially leaving thousands
of computer users without Internet access; an organization reveals plans
to mine asteroids for resources.

Today's Story Highlights

What Evil Lurks in the Hearts of Hactivists?
Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of IT pros believe their organizations
will be the target of a cyberattack in the next six months, and three
out of five (61 percent) say the attack will come from hactivists. That
was one of the findings in cybersecurity firm Bit9's annual security
survey released last week. What's surprising about the survey is the
concern given to hacktivist attacks, said Bit9 CTO Harry Sverdlove.

Apple and Microsoft Take Heat for High Prices Down Under
Today in international tech news: Lawmakers investigate why software and
downloads are so much more expensive in Australia, a mobile network is
lobbying to speed up the introduction of 4G in Britain, a wireless
provider might try to block Skype in Sweden, and Tech In Asia looks at
the inspiration for the Google Drive logo.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74982.html

A New Day Is Dawning for the Technology Market
Last week, I was at the Dell annual Industry Analyst Conference, and it
suddenly struck me that we are looking at a very different technology
market this decade. Apple is expected to slide, largely due to the
firm's inability to replace Steve Jobs; the dynamic that created
Microsoft is changing, and analysts are questioning the firm's relevance
as Dell and HP ramp up their own software efforts. Dell, in particular,
is doing some really interesting things.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74971.html

Linux and Gaming: Full Steam Ahead
"It has taken longer than most anyone would have anticipated, but the
fact remains that Valve is in fact creating a native Linux port of their
Steam game distribution client and of the Source Engine to run natively
on Linux," read the announcement on Phoronix on Wednesday. Think gaming
is trivial? Think again: In a matter of seconds, the topic was on fire
on Slashdot and throughout the Linux blogosphere.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74983.html

Pocket Will Have You Grabbing Content by the Handful
I've been playing around with Pocket, a not-so-new app which may have
undergone one of the smartest name changes in the history of the App
Store -- previously Pocket was known as "Read It Later." The app
basically lets you snag content that you find online and store it in a
handy way for reading or viewing at some point in the future.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74976.html

Support and Opposition Dig In as CISPA Clears House
On Thursday the House of Representatives passed the Cyber Intelligence
Sharing and Protection Act despite continued controversy regarding
privacy concerns and even a threat of veto from the White House. The
measure, which was approved by a 248-168 vote, would make it easier for
the federal government as well as corporations in the private sector to
share cyberthreat data with one another.

Today's Story Highlights

Burying Conventional Wisdom at The Next Web Conference
The Next Web, a network of online technology outlets, continued its
annual conference Friday in Amsterdam. Heeding to Amsterdam's night
life, The Next Web waited until 10 a.m. to get things started, which was
probably just about as early as the sleep-deprived attendees could have
hacked it.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74974.html

Smart TV May Be Too Smart for Its Own Good
If you've been anywhere near a consumer electronics retailer lately or
have leafed through the consumer electronics circulars and ads that
supplement Sunday newspapers, you've no doubt noticed the words "Smart
TV" shouting out at you. And if you've been wondering what a Smart TV
is, or whether whatever it is may be smarter than you are, read on.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74969.html

Instagram: Fun but No Threat to the Art World
Instagram, the popular photography and social networking app for the
iPhone, with a whopping 27 million iOS users, recently became available
for Android. Around 5 million Android users reportedly signed up for the
app in the first few days of the Android release. Then social network
Facebook offered $1 billion for the company. What's going on?
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74960.html

Not Much Hyperventilating Over Hacker's Hypervisor Code Theft
A hacker with the handle "Hardcore Charlie" has stolen source code for
VMware's ESX hypervisor and posted it on the Internet. A hypervisor
provides a virtualization layer between operating systems and the
underlying hardware, creating a virtual machine. This lets users run
multiple virtual machines on one processor.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74967.html

Samsung Puts Its New Exynos Chip on the Table
In a move that would be akin to unveiling an automobile's new engine in
advance of an auto show, Samsung on Thursday introduced its new 1.4 GHz
Exynos 4 Quad processor for smartphone and tablet devices. While the
company did not say which devices would first use the processor -- which
is based on the ARM Cortex A9 chip -- it announced that it would power
the "next Galaxy" device.

Disaster Recovery: Learning From Painful Experience (31:45 minutes)
Sometimes the only way you know whether your disaster recovery plan is
any good is when you face a real disaster. After 2008's Hurricane Ike
hit, insurance wholesaler Myron Steves & Co. had a difficult time
getting its systems back on track just when customers needed the
company's help the most. That motivated its IT team to set the stage for
a faster, cheaper and more robust DR capability.

Today's Story Highlights

Speakers Tussle Over Internet's Future at The Next Web Conference
The Next Web, a network of online technology outlets, kicked off its
annual conference Thursday morning in Amsterdam. One of the morning's
headline speakers was Alexis Ohanian, cofounder of the social news site
Reddit, whose 25-minute talk discussed the ongoing -- and increasingly
litigious -- battle over Internet rights.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74963.html

Ramping Up Your Laptop's RAM
One of the simplest ways to improve performance on a laptop is to add
more RAM, or random access memory. RAM prices have been steadily
dropping over the years, and it's now possible to see a significant
performance boost with an investment of twenty or thirty dollars. If
your machine is sluggish, you might need additional memory. Even if your
machine is new, a memory upgrade is worth investigating.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74957.html

Macs Crawling With Windows Malware, Study Finds
One in five Mac computers is carrying malware that could spread to PCs,
according to new research from security vendor Sophos. The security
team ran its Mac antivirus software on 100,000 Mac computers. It found
that most of the malware spotted is directed at Windows PCs, so Macs
harboring the infections don't show any symptoms.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74962.html

The MacPad Will Come - but Software Convergence Will Come First
Despite all the fantastic numbers delivered by Apple when it revealed
its quarterly earnings this week -- such as an eye-popping 94 percent
net profit year-to-year increase -- one question and one rambling answer
from Apple CEO Tim Cook made me sit up in my chair. The
question: Will Apple create a converged iPad/MacBook with a built-in
keyboard?
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74959.html

Facebook Enlists InfoSec Mavens for Big Malware Vaccination
Constant hammering by hackers and mutilation by malware have motivated
Facebook to enact new security measures. It's now incorporating the
malicious URL databases from Microsoft, McAfee, Trend Micro, Sophos and
Symantec into its URL blacklist system, which scans trillions of clicks
a day.

Today's Story Highlights

Online Storage: Pick a Cloud, Any Cloud
With the launch of Google Drive on Tuesday, the number of cloud storage
service options for consumers has become bewildering. Players include
Google with Google Drive, Windows Live SkyDrive, iCloud, Dropbox,
YouSendIt, SpiderOak, SugarSync, Box.net, Amazon Cloud Drive and Ubuntu
One. On a basic level, they all offer similar services.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74952.html

Cleaning Up With High-Tech Housekeeping Tools
Marla Cilley, aka the FlyLady, knows a thing or two about housecleaning.
One of those things is that it's hard to get motivated to do it. To
address this problem, she created an empire around inspiring others to
step up their housecleaning game. "We do behavior modification through
email, Facebook and Twitter, and that behavior modification helps our
members establish simple habits and string them into a routine," said
Cilley.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74815.html

Google Drive Hits China's Wall
Today in international tech news: Google Drive is "dead in the water" in
China. Meanwhile, a soap opera is unfolding in South Korea, where
there's a feud between the chairman of Samsung and family members who
want a bigger piece of the company's fortune. Elsewhere, Twitter plays a
central, and unfortunate, role in an English court case.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74948.html

Advanced Easy Editor Goes Bare Bones, Then Breaks Out the Sandpaper
Sometimes too much of a good thing in free software can create bad
impressions. For instance, some of the free stuff so easily available in
Linux distro package managers is so archaic that newcomers to the OS
might understandably shriek in horror. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely
am a big fan of FOSS applications.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74942.html

Asteroid Miners May Set the Stage for Space Colonization
On Tuesday, the founders of Planetary Resources held a press conference
at the Museum of Flight in Seattle to announce a new megamillion-dollar
plan to use commercially built robotic ships to travel to the asteroid
belt to mine for valuable minerals including platinum and gold. "As we
move beyond the bounds of Earth to a universe that is full of resources,
we can finally bring those materials back to Earth," said speaker Peter
Diamandis, cofounder of Planetary Resources.

Google Drive Kicks Into Gear
Google on Tuesday unveiled Google Drive, its long-anticipated storage
locker in the cloud. The service incorporates Google Docs and lets users
upload, access and share their files, including videos, photos and PDFs.
Google Drive works on Macs and PCs, and an Android app is available. An
iOS app is in the works.

Podcast
Disaster Recovery: Learning From Painful Experience (31:45 minutes)
Sometimes the only way you know whether your disaster recovery plan is
any good is when you face a real disaster. After 2008's Hurricane Ike
hit, insurance wholesaler Myron Steves & Co. had a difficult time
getting its systems back on track just when customers needed the
company's help the most. That motivated its IT team to set the stage for
a faster, cheaper and more robust DR capability.

Today's Story Highlights

SkyDrive Builds Up Syncing, Downsizes Free Space
Microsoft is giving its SkyDrive cloud storage service a makeover that
will include new apps and greater synchronization abilities across
mobile and PC devices. The new service includes SkyDrive for the Windows
desktop, so it can be managed right from Windows Explorer or from
SkyDrive.com.

The Lighter Side of IT Consumerization
You've probably heard the term "consumerization of IT." Some of the
network and security pros reading this probably think this is yet
another meaningless industry buzzword with little or no value. However,
to dismiss it as such is to potentially miss out on what is both a very
powerful concept ... and one that information security practitioners
ignore at their peril.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74930.html

Linux Admin Manual Is a Great Reference Tool That's Not for Dummies
Linux Administration: A Beginner's Guide by Wale Soyinka is a hands-on
manual for IT staffers who must dance with Windows and Linux. It is a
practical guide for network admins who deploy and maintain Linux and
other free and open source software. In this Sixth Edition opus, Soyinka
provides an extensive update on the latest Linux distros.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74933.html

Soulcaliber: A Beautiful Mashy-Slashy Mess
Action games can be tricky to pull off on iOS. Everything's done through
a touchscreen, so you don't have as much tactile feedback -- there are
no buttons under your fingertips to let you feel exactly where you need
to touch at precisely the right moment, while your eyes are busy with
the screen.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74932.html

Intel Aims to Bridge GPU Gap
Intel's highly anticipated Ivy Bridge chips, which offer the promise of
significant improvements in speed and power usage along with support for
USB 3.0, were officially launched on Monday. The first wave of these new
chips, which offer a smaller package compared to Intel's current Sandy
Bridge chips, will include 13 quad core processors. These new chips are
the first to use Intel's new 22-nanometer manufacturing process and
feature its new tri-gate technology.

Larry vs. Larry (14:26 minutes)
In this episode: CEOs Larry Ellison and Larry Page take the stand in
Oracle's suit against Google, in which the Android maker is accused of
ripping off Java code; Samsung and Apple are ordered to attempt a
settlement in one of their many patent fights; confusion abounds
regarding Windows Phone's upgrade path; a report indicates Facebook CEO
Mark Zuckerberg kept his company's board all but out of the loop during
the Instagram purchase negotiations, Ikea melds TV with furniture to
create Uppleva.

Today's Story Highlights

Infected Computers to Lose Web Access When FBI Band-Aid Falls Off
Come July 9, about 350,000 computers in the United States alone may lose
access to the Internet because they had previously been infected with
DNSChanger malware. The malware stealthily redirected victims accessing
various websites to rogue servers controlled by a cybercriminal ring.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74931.html

India Crowned Spam King of the World
Today in international tech news: India earns the dubious distinction of
being the world's top spammer, China vows to curb copyright infringement
yet again and -- whoops! -- a British company that intended to fire one
employee via email accidentally fires 1,300 of them. Meanwhile, naked
pictures on Facebook land an Australian man in jail and land a German
track star in the spotlight.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74927.html

Demo 2012: Looking for the Next Google, Facebook or Apple
Demo is a fascinating show. What you see is a string of companies that
each have six minutes to pitch their products to an audience of media,
investors, other companies (who might buy them), and peers. My initial
thought is that my friend Carmine Gallo, who wrote The Presentation
Secrets of Steve Jobs and teaches people how to present, could make a
living helping these folks present properly.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74916.html

Linus, Linux and the Millennium Technology Prize
It doesn't happen often here in the Linux blogosphere that FOSS fans
agree unanimously on -- well, on pretty much anything. Truth be told,
there's generally good reason for the dissension. Take Microsoft's
latest maneuvers, for example -- are they good news? Bad news? It's not
always easy to tell. Last week, however, one of those rare announcements
was made that brought universal joy to Linux aficionados around the
globe.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74925.html

Schlepping Files Got You Down? Enter the DragonDrop
I'm a highly visual guy, and while there are all sorts of ways to work
with files on my Mac, I still love cluttering up my desktop with
folders, links, documents and photos. I treat my desktop like a table
surface, and I have elaborate stacks and sections of folders and files.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74921.html

IBM Aims to Equip Electric Cars for the Long Haul
IBM researchers are looking to go the distance with electric vehicles.
On Friday, Big Blue announced that material innovation developers Asahi
Kasei and Central Glass had joined its Battery 500 Project team to
develop new battery technology for electric vehicles. IBM Research has
been striving to develop a lithium-air battery that would make it
possible for a family-sized electric car to drive 500 miles on a single
charge.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74915.html

AT&T's Watson APIs Let Apps Recognize Speech
AT&T could shake up the voice-recognition market when it launches
several application programming interfaces for its Watson speech
recognition program in June. Developers will be able to use these APIs
to create new apps and services with voice recognition and transcription
capabilities.

Today's Story Highlights

Big Data, Tough Questions
If you work with SIEM, you've been spending more than a couple of years
dealing with "Big Data" -- more lines of logs than any one person, or
even a reasonable-sized team of people, could ever hope to digest. Our
data is plenty big enough already. So why is everyone so hyped over Big
Data now?
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74910.html

German Court Puts YouTube on the Hook for Copyright Sins
Today in international tech news: legal battles galore. In the latest
go-around between Germany and Google, a German court rules that YouTube
is responsible for copyrighted materials uploaded by users. Meanwhile,
courts in Europe and Australia address the issue of ISP liability, a
website called "Facebox" ticks off you-know-who, and Apple defends
itself in a 3G/4G snafu.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74917.html

Look Before You Make the Leap to Hulu Plus for Android
The 5-year-old subscription streaming video service known as "Hulu Plus"
has doubled its subscriber numbers in the last seven months to more than
2 million, according to numbers bandied about by the company. Hulu is a
joint venture between investors and television operators: Comcast's
NBCUniversal, Fox Entertainment and the Walt Disney Company. Competitors
include Netflix and cable providers like Time Warner Cable.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74911.html

X-Ray Vision Tech Could Work With Cellphone Cameras
X-ray vision won't just be limited to comic book superheroes in the
future. A team at the University of Texas at Dallas led by Kenneth O,
Ph.D., professor of electrical engineering, has made new scientific
advances that could make it possible for cameras to see through solid
walls. The researchers have designed a chip that could make it possible
for the camera on a mobile device to see through walls, wood, plastic,
paper -- and even into the human body.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/74906.html

Next-Gen iPhone May Be Baptized in Liquidmetal
Apple will use so-called Liquidmetal for the casing of the iPhone 5,
which is expected in June. "Liquidmetal" is the commercial name of an
amorphous metal alloy developed by researchers at the California
Institute of Technology and marketed by their startup, Liquidmetal
Technologies.
