Podcast
The Proper Care and Feeding of Virtualized Environments (29:49 minutes)
IT support has grown ever more complex with the increased use of
virtualization and the cloud. Virtualization isn't just server by
server; it really impacts the entire data center. It needs to be thought
about holistically, particularly in regard to things like security and
performance.

Today's Story Highlights

Google Gets Going With Go
Google has rolled out version 1 of its experimental open source Go
computer programing language, 14 months after it first announced the
language back in 2009. Go "is an attempt to combine the ease of
programming of an interpreted, dynamically typed language with the
efficiency and safety of a statically typed, compiled language," said Go
team lead Rob Pike.

PDF to Speech Stumbles a Bit but Sounds Nicer Than Android
I've been looking at ways to optimize the time I spend sitting in
traffic. The old days when listening to the radio constituted the sum
extent of productivity achieved while staring at someone else's tailgate
are long gone, thanks to the smartphone. I've already written about in-
car Internet, including extending audio media like podcasts and TV audio
streams to the driver's seat.

FTC to Congress: Shorten Data Brokers' Leash
The Federal Trade Commission this week urged Congress to impose new
regulations on companies that collect consumer data related to Internet
browsing habits. Under the policy the FTC suggests, data brokers, or the
holders of personal consumer information, must allow consumers access to
that information.

Xbox Lassos More Content to Wrangle More Eyeballs
Microsoft continued to expand its television offerings for members of
its Xbox Live Gold service Monday by adding HBO Go, Major League
Baseball video and Comcast's on-demand video service. Comcast Xfinity TV
allows Xbox Gold members to access the cable carrier's expansive library
of entertainment programming whenever they want it.

iPad: Hot Sales, Harsh Spotlight
Apple CEO Tim Cook has traveled to China, hoping to bolster investment
in the enormous Eastern market. Emerging markets are critical for many
tech companies, and Apple already has its foot in the door in China.
Factories located there are vital manufacturers for the company. The
country also represents a potentially huge sales opportunity in which
Apple is trying to invest deeper.
