Today's Story Highlights

Now for Something Completely Different: Taking the Windows 8 Plunge
Microsoft has made available a consumer preview version of its upcoming
Windows 8 operating system that you can try out. The OS caught my eye
because the tile-like user interface appears radically different from
the boring old reiterations of Windows 3.1 -- with minor tweaks that
irritatingly require getting used to after every upgrade. This looks
like it's worth it.

Android Tablets and Windows 8: Let the Games Begin
Windows 8 is on its way. In fact, it's already here, in a manner of
speaking. Microsoft recently released what it called a "consumer
preview" version of the OS. When the final versions arrive, it will
finally give Microsoft a leg up in the tablet market. That might take
a bite out of the market share Android has managed to scratch out in
tablets.

Google's Big Fat Search Overhaul: Just Doing What Google Does
Google is rumored to be at work on new technologies and methodologies
that could significantly alter the way consumers search on the Internet,
as well as how brands can expect to see their ads displayed. More
emphasis will be placed on semantic search, a process that takes into
account the meaning of the search term inputted rather than merely
recognizing keywords.

Encyclopedia Britannica Closes the Book on Print
Encyclopedia Britannica will switch to an all-digital format, bringing
its 244-year printing history to a close. It's time to concentrate on
expanding coverage for digital consumers rather than continuing to print
the heavy, relatively expensive volumes, said the Chicago-based company
that makes the reference books.

Hey Apple, Thanks for Cracking the Whip on App Cheaters
Over the last couple of months, I've been struggling with the Apple App
Store, both via iTunes and my iPhone and iPad. While I find the overall
quality of apps to be vastly superior to what I generally find via
Amazon on my Kindle Fire, I've noticed a disconcerting number of
crappy apps.
