Today's Story Highlights
We Can Fly to the Moon, but We Can't Secure the Cloud?
The entire freaking tech industry is falling down on the job, and Apple,
my favorite company in the world, is stumbling around too. What's worse
is that it doesn't seem to care. Apple is the most profitable consumer
tech company in the world, with billions of dollars in the bank. Yet the
company can't seem to be bothered to imagine how easily iCloud user
accounts could be compromised.

Samsung's Gear VR Hits New Note
Samsung and Oculus on Wednesday unveiled the Gear VR -- a virtual
reality wireless headset optimized for Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 phablet,
also announced Wednesday. The Gear VR -- or "Samsung Gear VR Innovator
Edition," as Oculus describes it -- will be compatible with a wide range
of film, gaming, 360-degree video, and educational and experiential
content.

Matthew Miller: The Remaking of Fedora 1, 2, 3
Fedora is perhaps one of the hallmark Linux distributions. It is
sponsored by Red Hat, the commercial developer of RHEL. Red Hat's
investment in the Fedora community is collaborative. Fedora Linux
releases often provide RHEL developers with a field test environment
that incubates innovative open source software technologies. Red Hat
Linux 1.0 was released in late 1994 as Red Hat Commercial Linux.

Now Netflix Members Can Pick Which Friends Can See Their Picks
Recommending movies and TV shows you've watched on Netflix to individual
Facebook friends just got easier. The company on Tuesday launched a new
social recommendation feature that lets users pick and choose the
contacts they'd like to interact with after viewing a video. "It makes
more sense that way," Jan Dawson, chief analyst with Jackdaw Research.

NASA's Opportunity to Lose Total Recall, Gain Spotless Mind
The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration next
month will reformat the flash memory of the Mars exploration rover
Opportunity. Opportunity's been undergoing computer resets with
increasing frequency -- it had 12 in August alone. Recovery from each of
the resets takes one to two days, which means the rover was out of
action for most of the month.
