Today's Story Highlights

Millions of Gmail Users Victims of Latest Password Heist
About 5 million Gmail usernames and passwords have been published on a
Russian bitcoin security forum as a text file. Sixty percent of the 4.93
million credentials in the file were valid, claimed the poster, who used
the online handle "tvskit." The information reportedly was dumped on
several Russian cybercrime forums and shared through a variety of peer-
to-peer services.

Will Ferrell Calls On Gamers to Launch Cancer Assault
Comedian Will Ferrell on Wednesday announced an effort to battle cancer
by giving gamers a chance to participate in a two-hour gaming event with
him. The Indiegogo initiative aims to raise $375,000 for nonprofit
organizations Cancer for College and DonateGames, by asking gamers to
contribute at least $10. One randomly selected giver will win the
opportunity to play games with Ferrell on Oct. 26.

The Importance of Openness to the Internet of Things
Consumers today are in an awkward position. Personal privacy is being
wiped out by the Internet. At the same time, new technologies that
interconnect our devices, homes and offices are offering stupendous
advantages. Welcome to the new Internet of Things' open world.
"Openness" means something different depending on whether you're basking
in the convenience or contributing to a vendor's cash flow.

Pols Besieged by Fast, Furious Messages on Internet Slowdown Day
U.S. lawmakers were getting an estimated 1,000 calls a minute from
constituents concerned about Net neutrality by noon Pacific Time on
Internet Slowdown Day, an online demonstration held on Wed., Sept. 10.
"We've set a new record for FCC comments and beat Janet Jackson's
'wardrobe malfunction,'" said David Moon of Demand Progress. Father of
the Internet Tim Berners-Lee tweeted his support.

Comcast Ad Tinkering Could Muck Up WiFi Security
Comcast has begun using JavaScript injection to serve ads for its
services to devices connected to its publicly accessible Xfinity WiFi
hotspots across the U.S. The ads are fleeting, but they can appear
roughly every seven minutes. The program reportedly began months ago.
"This practice is definitely concerning for multiple reasons," said the
Electronic Freedom Foundation's Jeremy Gillula.
