Today's Story Highlights

New Vizio Line Sleek, Light and Kind of Apple-ish
Vizio rolled out its first line of computer devices Thursday, including
CN15 laptops, the CT14/C15 Ultrabooks, and CA24/CA27 all-in-one PCs. The
thin, metallic devices in the computer line have drawn comparisons to
products made by Apple. And with the clean Microsoft Signature user
interface, they give the user an experience that's perhaps close to what
one would get on a Mac.

Microsoft Event Drums Up Major Buzz
Microsoft invited reporters and industry experts this week to a special
event on Monday in Los Angeles, where it promises to make a "major"
announcement. Since then, speculation has been rampant about exactly
what that announcement will be, though Microsoft has not released any
further details. Theories that the announcement will be tablet-related
are dominating the conversation at the moment.

Scientists Split Atom, Then Put It Back Together
Mention the words, "splitting the atom," and most people will
automatically think of nuclear fission, bombs and radioactivity.
Recently, however, physicists at Germany's University of Bonn not only
managed to "split" an atom but also put it back together again.

Australian Etailer Puts the Screws on IE7 Users
Today in international tech news: An Australian online retailer
institutes a tax on people using Internet Explorer 7. Also: A nine-year-
old in Scotland who had taken to blogging about her school lunches is
muzzled -- and then unmuzzled -- by school authorities, maligned
manufacturer Foxconn experiences yet another suicide in China, and the
UK rejects Julian Assange's request to reopen his extradition appeal.

MetroFax: Faxing on the Fly Is Almost a Breeze
Reports of the demise of the fax machine may be premature if research in
Chico Harlan's article in The Washington Post last week is to be
believed. Fax machines are still in 59 percent of Japanese homes, Harlan
found. They are still popular because of a cultural interest in the use
of paper and handwriting.

Obama Signs Order for Full-Bore Broadband Expansion
President Barack Obama on Thursday signed an executive order intended to
make broadband construction along federal roadways and properties in the
United State more effective and up to 90 percent cheaper. Building a
nationwide broadband network will strengthen the U.S. economy and put
more Americans back to work, the president said.
