Building the Data Center on Small Victories (31:35 minutes)
Keeping an operating budget in place can be a lot easier when you have
something to show for it. Sometimes that requires strategy. IT managers
can keep the cash flowing by setting themselves up for quick wins and
small victories. "We've seen that when a customer is successful in
breaking down a large project into a set of quick wins, there are some
very positive outcomes from that," said HP's Duncan Campbell.

Today's Story Highlights

EPIC Pushes FTC to Get in the Ring With Google
The fallout from changes Google plans to make to its privacy policies
and terms of service continues, with the Electronic Privacy Information
Center suing the Federal Trade Commission over the issue. EPIC is
seeking injunctive and other relief to force the FTC to enforce a
consent order it issued in October against Google.

Storage Tech Sizzles With Hot, Hot Hard Drives
An international team of researchers led by the University of York in
England has demonstrated fast data recording on hard drives using heat.
They used an ultra-short pulse of heat to reverse the poles in a
ferrimagnet in order to write the data.

Mounting a Tablet in Your Vehicle's Front Seat
Factory-supplied satellite navigation and entertainment systems can add
thousands to the cost of a new vehicle. Plus, the speed at which
consumer electronics come to market is significantly faster than a car's
development cycle, so your in-vehicle equipment is outdated before the
car leaves the new car lot. Even an aftermarket OEM kit is in the
thousands.

The Trouble With Mandriva
Now that Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Mint are enjoying such
widespread attention and success, it's increasingly difficult to
remember that not all distros are sharing in the same good fortune. Take
Mandriva, for example. This venerable distro dates back to 1998, when it
was born as Mandrake Linux, but its last few years have been
tempestuous.

DDoS the Weapon of Choice for Hackers Driven by Politics, Not Profits
Politics, rather than good old-fashioned theft, is increasingly the
motivation of malicious hackers who attack websites using DDoS
techniques. Arbor Networks has found that ideological hacktivism was the
motivation behind most distributed denial of service attacks in 2011.
Attacks for profit or competitive reasons still happen, but the rise of
the political hacker is changing the threat landscape.
