Today's Story Highlights

A Little Less Surface, a Little More Sales?
Microsoft is expected to debut a smaller version of its Surface line of
tablets later this month. The company reportedly will showcase the
device for the first time, along with other new Surface models, at a New
York City event on May 20. The smaller version of the Surface will run
on Qualcomm processors rather than the Nvidia and Intel chips Microsoft
previously has used for the Surface line.

The Digital Writing Revolution
It's natural to reach for a pad and pen when you need to take notes, but
the end result can be frustratingly limited. Yet clicking away on a
keypad doesn't quite cut it for all situations. "The cool thing about
using the pen with the computer is that it gives you choices," said Doug
Little, public relations manager at Wacom. "You're able to draw, write
-- basically do anything you want."

Alibaba Files for Much-Anticipated IPO
Chinese e-commerce behemoth Alibaba filed an initial public offering
prospectus Tuesday, inching closer to what could be the biggest
technology IPO in history. Alibaba Group handles 80 percent of all
online commerce in China; it processed some $250 billion worth of
transactions for 231 million users in 2013. The company's market value
has been estimated as high as $200 billion.

White House Report: Climate Change Threat Is Dire
The White House has demanded urgent action on climate change amid the
release of a report that spells out the looming threats to America and
the global population. More than 300 experts worked for several years to
create the latest National Climate Assessment. The report highlights
tangible climate change seen by members of various industries in recent
years.

GitHub Unleashes Atom Into Open Source Realm
After launching its Atom text editor into beta back in February, GitHub
on Tuesday announced that the software is now fully open source under
the MIT License. "Much of Atom's functionality is provided by packages,
and every Atom package has been open source since the day we launched
the beta," explained GitHub developer Nathan Sobo. "Today, we're open
sourcing the rest of Atom."

Today's Story Highlights

Facebook's $2B Baby Oculus Denies Rival's Rights Claims
A simmering conflict between Oculus, a virtual reality startup Facebook
bought last month for $2 billion, and ZeniMax Media began to boil
Monday. ZeniMax las week claimed one of its former employees, John
Carmack, improperly shared some of its tech with Oculus for use in its
Rift virtual reality headset, which is touted as having the power to
bring VR to the masses.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80399.html

Sony's Record-Busting Magnetic Storage Tape Unlikely to Stick
Sony has announced magnetic backup tape with the world's highest areal
recording density -- 148 GB per square inch. It provides about 74 times
the recording capacity of conventional mag tape media, Sony claimed.
Data cartridges made using this technology could record more than 185 TB
of data each. This technology is aimed at applications that require high
density.

Security Pros Struggle With Cyberthreat Angst
As the volume and sophistication of cyberattacks increase, system
defenders in the trenches are losing confidence in their ability to
protect their organizations' information assets, suggests a survey
released last week. The survey of almost 5,000 global IT security pros
found that 57 percent felt their organizations were unprotected from
sophisticated cyberattacks.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80394.html

Sexism in FOSS Rears Its Ugly Head Again... and Again
It seems there's always some kind of conflict at work in the FOSS
community lately, whether it's based on race, on gender or something
else. Most recently, it's the gender issue that has been felt most
keenly. Not only have we seen the whole GitHub debacle unfold and
explode, but then a certain post appeared online that got the Linux
community upset all over again.

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft vs. Google: Chasing Butts While Running From Risks
Google and Microsoft are positioned against each other as primary
competitors, and that could mean trouble. I remember past dynamics
similar to theirs that didn't end well for either company. Apple focused
on IBM (the 1984 ad) and didn't see Microsoft coming. Microsoft focused
on AOL and didn't see the Internet coming. Intel focused on AMD so much
it missed both Transmeta and ARM.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80385.html

Nokia Launches Fund to Invest in Smart Vehicles
Nokia has created a $100 million fund earmarked for investing in firms
that specialize in connected and smart vehicles. The move comes days
after the Finnish firm forked over its handset unit to Microsoft. Nokia
already has a mapping-and-location company called "Here." The new fund
will be designed to support the growth of the ecosystem around Here's
mapping and location products and services.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80393.html

Microsoft Gives XP One last Hug
When Microsoft included Windows XP in the Internet Explorer zero-day
browser vulnerability patch it issued this week, some industry observers
were stunned. Had the company decided to backtrack on its assertion that
it would no longer support XP? Had it knuckled under to user protests?
Not really. Redmond has not decided to backtrack on killing support for
Windows XP; it made a one-time exception.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80390.html

Snapchat Adds New Features to Keep Users From Disappearing
Snapchat built its popularity on pictures that disappear, but new
features added to the latest version of the app show its creators want
it to be more than a one-trick pony. Both text and video chatting on
Thursday became available in the mobile app for Android and iOS devices.
"Until today, we felt that Snapchat was missing an important part of
conversation: presence," reads the company blog.

Today's Story Highlights

The Calm Before 2014's Tech Storm: Apple Will Bring the Rain
There's a lot shaping up for Apple this year, and it's going to be wild.
In fact, there's so much going on at Infinite Loop in Cupertino these
days that it makes me believe that 2014 will be the first post-Steve
Jobs year when Apple -- in the eyes of the broader tech world -- stops
dancing around and finally brings the rain. For starters, the iPhone
will get a bigger screen.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80384.html

All Things Appy: Top 5 New or Improved Android Apps
Five of the top free Android apps that either have been introduced for
the first time or significantly updated this year are in the categories
of password management, Web browser compression, lock screen
functionality and media. Google's Android OS apps can be obtained in
Google's Play Store. Browse to the Play Store -- you'll find it in your
device's app drawer. Then search for the app.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80352.html

White House Opens Heart About Vulnerabilities
Smarting from speculation that the U.S. intelligence community hoarded
knowledge about the Heartbleed bug that's placed millions of servers and
devices that access the Internet at risk, the White House Tuesday gave
the public some insight into how it decides to release information about
computer vulnerabilities. Disclosing them is usually in the national
interest, it said.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/80379.html

Musix Linux: Sweet Strains Jarred by Sour Notes
The Musix Linux distro is a specialty OS with an impressive collection
of tools for users with a passion mostly for audio and music production.
That same collection of tools should be included for video, given the
blending of music and video popular in distributing entertainment on the
Internet today. Yet it is missing from Musix. Musix also lacks its own
software repository.
