Amazon's Kindle Catches Fire (12:59 minutes)
In this episode: Amazon reveals the Kindle Fire, a 7-inch Android
tablet that sells for $199; reports of Apple scaling back iPad
production raise questions of whether the company's scared of Amazon's
tablet; RIM's gloom continues as activist investor Carl Icahn reportedly
shows up on its radar; Facebook takes flack for putting cookies on
users' browsers that could allow the network to track activities even
after a member has signed off the site; Microsoft bags Samsung in its
hunt for Android patent profits.

Today's Story Highlights

Is Amazon Shopping for WebOS?
In the wake of Amazon's launch of its Kindle Fire tablet on Wednesday,
the company's reportedly looking at buying the Palm webOS operating
system from ailing HP. Amazon spent quite a bit of time, effort and
money tweaking Android for the Kindle Fire, which reportedly presold
95,000 units on its first day. So why would it think of getting a new
operating system?

DoJ Doc Reveals Cellphone Providers' Long, Long Memories
A recently revealed U.S. Department of Justice document has provided
details about what kind of usage information is retained by the nation's
largest mobile phone providers, as well as how long they retain it. In
some cases, information is stored for many years. The document, a
single-paged memo, was obtained by the North Carolina ACLU.

The Kindle Fire's Browser: Mostly Smooth as Silk
The Kindle Fire made its big debut this week as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos
introduced the tablet along with other new members of the Kindle family
on Wednesday. The Fire's been touted as a challenger to the Apple iPad,
but the real threat to Apple's iconic tablet may come from the Silk
browser that will run on the Fire.

Giving a Clunky Old CMS the WordPress Treatment
When it became clear eMusic's old, custom-built content management
system was becoming a drag on the company, the search was on for a
replacement. WordPress offered an open source tool with a passionate
developer community. The CMS switch worked out well for eMusic in the
end, but it wasn't always easy. Here are some lessons learned in the
process.

Reps Call on FTC to Probe Facebook's Fast-and-Loose Privacy Practices
Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, co-chairmen of
the Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus, have sent a letter to Joe
Leibowitz, chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, addressing
Facebook's use of cookies to gather information from members who surf
the 905,000 sites that display its "like" button.

Make Room for the Enterprise App Store (25:27 minutes)
With mobile devices like smartphones and tablets in their hands at all
hours, workforces are becoming more mobile and more powerful. However,
those devices have also caused enterprise IT leaders much dread due to
the problems involved with supporting them all. Making room for an
enterprise app store may be part of a better mobile management strategy.

Today's Story Highlights

Motorola Tries to Reheat Xoom With 4G Boost
Motorola and Verizon Wireless on Wednesday got around to delivering
what's been promised to owners of the Xoom tablet for several months: 4G
LTE. When the Motorola Xoom first went on sale early in 2011, buyers
were told that they'd eventually be able to send their 3G-wireless-
equipped tablets to a workshop where they'd be upgraded with faster 4G
wireless hardware free of charge.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73388.html

How to Turn a Nook Into a Great Android Tablet
Amazon's $199 tablet will be one of the first sub-$300 tablets with a
decent specification. However, if you can't wait until November, don't
necessarily want a book vendor's skin on your device, and haven't ponied
up for an iPad yet, you can get a solid base-Android tablet for around
$250 today -- or a lot less, if you already happen to have a Nook Color
7-inch e-reader.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73386.html

Fire vs. iPad: Pick Your Garden
Starting at a mind-warping US$199, the new Amazon Kindle Fire tablet has
nailed a price point that the $249 Barnes & Noble Nook Color was only
able to flirt with. Put it this way: As a consumer-oriented device ready
to deliver e-books, movies, TV shows, apps, Web browsing and email, two
Kindle Fire tablets can be purchased for $100 less than the $499 Apple
iPad 2.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73387.html

MeeGo Loses Its Last Friend as Intel Turns to Tizen
Months after losing support from handset maker Nokia, the MeeGo mobile
OS lost another major backer when Intel announced Wednesday it wouldn't
continue with the Linux-based operating system. Instead, Intel will
partner with Samsung to develop Tizen, a new open source Linux build.
Intel launched MeeGo in 2010 with partner Nokia, but soon afterward
Nokia turned away from MeeGo in favor of a deal with Microsoft.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73384.html

Samsung, Microsoft Deal Tugs at the Rug Under Google's Feet
Microsoft and Samsung have signed an agreement to cross-license their
patent portfolios, providing broad coverage for each company's products.
Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung's Android-powered mobile
phones, and the companies have agreed to focus on further development
and marketing of Windows-powered smartphones.

Today's Story Highlights

Amazon Blazes New Tablet Trail With Kindle Fire
Amazon unveiled its long-awaited answer to the Apple iPad on Wednesday:
the Kindle Fire. However, Amazon CEO and Founder Jeff Bezos positioned
the Kindle Fire as a new class of the company's Kindle e-reader rather
than an iPad challenger per se. The Fire has a customized version of
Android and runs Amazon's Silk browser, which leverages the Amazon
cloud. Amazon also announced three other Kindle readers.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73376.html

Mango Makes Windows Phone a Contender
Microsoft on Tuesday released the latest version of its smartphone
operating system, a version that could make handsets using the OS more
competitive with market leaders Android and iOS. The new release --
Windows Phone 7.5, aka "Mango" -- has more than 500 new features,
according to Microsoft, most of which are aimed at improving the
productivity of those who use phones running the operating system.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73377.html

Next-Gen Firewalls Make Old Arguments New Again
The last few years have brought us arguably the most significant change
in firewall technology in decades. Ever since "stateful inspection" was
introduced by Check Point in the late 1990s, firewall administrators and
information security officers have been defining security policies based
primarily on a connection's source IP address, destination IP address
and service.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73375.html

K3b Burns Hot, Burns Bright
Burning optical platters can be frustrating and time-consuming. Show me
a computer user who doesn't have a trash bin filled with spent CDs and
DVDs, and I will show you a user who doesn't burn discs. Linux users
have several good CD/DVD burning apps available -- and a pile of not-so-
good choices.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73368.html

Spotify Requires New Users to Get Friendly With Facebook
The problem with hitching your wagon to a shooting star, as online music
service Spotify is beginning to discover, is that sometimes you can get
burned. Spotify is one of several online music services that have teamed
up with Facebook recently and was singled out by the social networking
giant at its f8 developers conference in San Francisco last week.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73371.html

Just Because You're Paranoid Doesn't Mean Facebook Isn't Watching You
Facebook's most recent API allows applications to post status updates to
a user's wall without their intervention. This is part of Facebook
Instant and is known as frictionless sharing. This means users no longer
have to proactively decide to share an item, and there's a risk that
something could be unintentionally shared with Facebook friends.

Today's Story Highlights

The Pentagon, Contractors and Hackers: Who Protects the Protectors?
The United States Department of Defense is reportedly extending its
Defense Industrial Base Cyber Pilot program, first announced by deputy
defense secretary William Lynn in June, to defense contractors. Under
this program, the DoD, together with the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security, will share classified information and information on how to
use it with defense contractors.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73365.html

The Mystery of the Missing iPad Parts
Apple reportedly has scaled back orders for iPad parts -- possibly by as
much as 25 percent for the fourth quarter. There is a good deal of
skepticism about the report's accuracy, though, along with plenty of
conjectures that could explain the change, from the mundane
(geographical redistribution) to the sublime (design changes in the
works).
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73363.html

MadPad HD: The Sound of Silliness
Smule is a company known for turning iThings into musical gizmos. Its
"Ocarina" app was the first time I'd seen a phone act as a virtual wind
instrument. Its "Leaf Trombone" wasn't quite as enthralling in my
estimation. But I loved "I Am T-Pain" for its quick and easy approach to
autotune. Smule has recently also updated its sound sampler for iPad,
which it calls "MadPad HD."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73359.html

That Was the Breach That Was
A series of intrusions into the heart of the Linux Kernel.org servers in
late August that went undetected for some 17 days is still shrouded in
mystery. If Linux developers know how the breach occurred, they are not
saying. They also are keeping mum on the extent of any damage the break-
in caused.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73364.html

OnStar's Plan to Keep Tabs on Ex-Customers Riles Lawmakers
OnStar recently raised hackles in the privacy community with revisions
to its privacy policy. Now, members of Congress have taken up the issue.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has asked the Federal Trade Commission to
investigate the new policy on the grounds that it may be an unfair or
deceptive trade practice. The company's new terms are "one of the most
brazen invasions of privacy in recent memory," he charged.

Today's Story Highlights

What's So Special About an Amazon Tablet
Amazon's going to make an announcement on Wednesday, and the smart money
is on the online retail giant unveiling its long-awaited tablet device.
Though Amazon has officially been quiet about whether such a tablet even
exists, rumors hold that it will run Android 2.1 and cost considerably
less than the iPad's $500 starting price.

Brain Scans Paint Picture of What the Mind's Eye Sees
Reading a brain with a machine to get the information in it has been the
stuff of sci-fi for years. Now, scientists at UC Berkeley's Gallant Lab
have demonstrated that it's possible. The scientists used functional
magnetic resonance imaging to reconstruct movies subjects watched by
reading their brain activity.

IBM's Sam Palmisano Shoots for CEO of the Decade
Last decade, Steve Jobs was the clear leader, and he ended the decade as
the top CEO. We are early in this decade, but already Sam Palmisano has
jumped out to an early lead. Like Jobs, it isn't because he is lobbying
for this title -- it is because he is already being recognized by peers
as being the best there is. Interestingly, this came through at an IBM
Leadership event last week.

Will Linux Be Locked Out of Windows 8 PCs?
No sooner had bloggers decided that Microsoft's widely trumpeted Windows
8 wouldn't pose any serious threat to Linux than a whole new wrinkle
emerged. "Wrinkle" is actually a bit of a euphemism, in this case; in
fact, it was the prospect of a computing landscape that could change
life as Linux users know it.

Songify: Get Ready for Some Hilarious Ear Worms
I stumbled upon Songify, a free app for iPhone and newer iOS-based
devices, when I ran into the wildly popular video about a homespun chick
named Debbie who supposedly recorded an eHarmony video introduction bio.
The YouTube video is called "Songify This: Can't Hug Every Cat," and
it's freaking hilarious.

Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Wireless Mobile speaker
September 26, 2011 at 12:27 PM

Bose-SoundLink-Wireless-Mobile-speaker

Bose has long been known for its quality audio gear, and the company now has a new portable speaker for bluetooth enabled mobile devices called the SoundLink Wireless Mobile speaker which is shipping now. Pair it with your smartphone or tablet and you'll be streaming your music playlist anywhere you want through the SoundLink Mobile speaker, which is described as being less than two inches thick and no bigger than an average book. The unit has a pop-out stand for easy setup, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which provides over three hours at high volume, and more than eight hours at typical listening levels, according to Bose.

This mobile speaker is also pretty rugged, as it has been tested in Bose environmental labs to resist salt-fog, sand, wind, and moisture. Apparently it will also take a beating if you drop the device, as it has end-caps made from automotive-grade chrome.

The Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile speaker ships with a standard trim level and a dark gray Cordura nylon cover for $299.95, while the LX mode has a premium trim level and a dark brown leather cover for $349.95.

Verizon Wireless is set to release the new HTC Rhyme mid-range smartphone to consumers on September 29th for $199.99 with a two-year contract.  The HTC Rhyme comes in Clearwater, Hourglass and Plum purple color unibody designs, and it is packaged with a few useful accessories that include a dock, a unique "charm" device, and matching headphones. The charm plugs into the Rhyme and lights-up when you receive a call or message, a very cute idea aimed obviously at female customers. This Android 2.3 Gingerbread based smartphone also features a 3.7-inch WVGA, super LCD display, a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, power LED flash and instant shutter, as well as face detection, action burst scene, and panoramic mode.

HTC-Rhyme

The device offers the latest HTC Sense 3.5 UI, and HTC Watch, which features a selection of movies and TV shows that can be downloaded for instant viewing. See full specs here.

HTC Rhyme accessories:

- HTC Rhyme Docking Station - The Docking Station simultaneously recharges the phone while turning the Rhyme into an alarm clock and music center so you can wake to your favorite songs played directly from the built-in Bluetooth capable speakers.

- HTC Rhyme Charm - The Charm is an innovative approach for discretely alerting you to incoming calls or messages while the HTC Rhyme is deep in your bag.  The Charm is a small light-emitting cube that attaches to the phone by a cord that can dangle from your bag and also be used to quickly pull the phone out of your bag.  It also makes it easy to find your phone buried in your cluttered purse or backpack.

- HTC Rhyme Sports Armband - The Sports Armband allows you to work out in style while keeping your apps and music close to you.

- HTC Rhyme Tangle Free Headphones - The Tangle Free Headphones take the hassle out of listening to your favorite music.

- HTC Rhyme Bluetooth Headset - The wireless headset follows the same design cues as the phone itself and enables for easy hands free use.

- HTC Rhyme Bluetooth Car Speaker – The wireless speaker clips onto sun visor in your car for easy and safe driving.
