Google Flexes Nexus' Tablet Muscles (11:59 minutes)
In this episode: Google adds a tablet to its Nexus line of products with
the introduction of the Nexus 7, a 7-inch slate made by Asus that will
arrive in July for $199; Facebook pretends everyone on its network uses
its email service; Apple reportedly draws up plans for a major iTunes
overhaul that could arrive this autumn; a California judge bans Samsung
from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the U.S.; a New Zealand court rules
that authorities botched their raid on the home of Megaupload founder
Kim Dotcom.

Today's Story Highlights

Spray-On Battery Could Slip Power Into Tighter Spaces
Researchers at Rice University have developed a paint that works as a
battery, and it could change the way batteries are produced and reduce
energy storage restrictions. The paint-on battery is similar in material
balance to traditional lithium-ion batteries. It has five layers -- a
positive and a negative current collector, a cathode, an anode and an
ion-conducting separator in the middle.

Apple Products See the Unpolished Side of Chrome
Mac owners have been having more than a few headaches with Google's
Chrome browser. Owners of new Macbook Airs have been complaining for
several days that their devices have been freezing or crashing when they
use the Chrome browser. Google confirmed that the problem is a leak of
graphics resources in the Chrome browser related to the drawing of
plugins on Mac OS X.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75520.html

Plex for Android Is Pretty but Pixelated, Plodding and Painful to Use
Plex is a good looking media platform for running media files on Google
TV, tablets, phones and so on. Online channels include Hulu, Vimeo and
more. On looks and apparent tight integration between my existing
Android-based devices, I decided to check out Plex's two Android apps. I
was interested in particular in how well they integrate Android tablets
and Google TV.

Modbook, the Mac Tablet of Yore, Marches Back Into Action
The Modbook Pro, a converted MacBook Pro that has been modified by
Modbook and is billed as the first Mac tablet, is set to return to the
market later in 2012 after an absence of several years. Its predecessor,
the Modbook, which was based on a MacBook, was one of the best-of-show
winners at Macworld 2007.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75508.html

Apple Draws Up Blueprint for iTunes Renovation
Apple's iTunes may be getting a facelift soon. The new iTunes Store will
be rolled out later this year -- most likely along with the next
generation of Apple's popular iPhone -- and sport improved discovery and
sharing capabilities, as well as better iCloud integration, according to
a report.

The Supply Chain's Weak Cybersecurity Links (27:50 minutes)
"The supply chain problem really is rather daunting for many businesses,
because supply chains are global now, and it means that ... finished
products have a tremendous numbers of elements," said former NSA Senior
Counsel Joel Brenner. "This software, where was it written? Maybe it was
written in Russia -- or maybe somewhere in Ohio or in Nevada, but by
whom? We don't know."

Today's Story Highlights

Court Rules Kiwi Cops Botched Megaupload Raid
New Zealand police used invalid warrants to search and seize property
from the mansion of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, a high court judge in
that country has reportedly ruled. The papers that authorities used were
general warrants and fell well short of describing the offenses alleged,
High Court Judge Helen Winkelmann said.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75507.html

A Handful of Devs Get Their Hands on Google Glasses
Skydivers, mountain bikers and rappellers donned Google Glasses on
Wednesday and captured video of their stunts at the Google I/O
conference, giving the world a glimpse of the capabilities of this new
wearable technology. Google is selling the glasses for $1,500 to U.S.-
based developers who were in attendance at the conference.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75502.html

Google Charges Into the Living Room With New Nexus Q Streamer
Google worked toward pulling together its ecosystem Wednesday,
announcing an array of new products and services at its I/O Developer
Conference. In addition to its widely anticipated Nexus 7 tablet, the
company unveiled its Nexus Q media streamer and its Google Cloud
Messaging service for Android; made much of its enhancements to Google
Play; and launched a demonstration of Google Glass, its smart eyepiece.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75495.html

UK Officials: If You Want Your Porn, You'll Have to Come and Get It
Today in international tech news: British lawmakers continue to discuss
porn; A New Zealand judge rules that search warrants used in the arrest
of Megaupload.com founder Kim Dotcom were unlawful; The New York Times '
Sina Weibo account is suspended -- after one day -- as the outlet's
Chinese-language site goes live.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75503.html

Staying Safe and Secure in the Public WiFi Wilderness
With the apparent clamp-down on formerly liberal U.S. data quotas by
mobile operators, public WiFi hotspots -- like cafes -- for daily Web
consumption may become an ever more likely Internet environment for many
of us. Europeans have been used to limited mobile data quotas under
various euphemisms like "fair use policies" and "data plans" for some
time.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75497.html

Bellowing Ads Have No Place in iTunes
As an Apple product-lovin' enthusiast, my default gut reaction is to
defend Apple, just like my gut reaction to defend my family and friends.
When Apple does something silly, or more likely doesn't do something it
ought to do -- or consumers wish it would do -- I tend to think about it
from the perspective of Apple's business interests. And I rationalize
it.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75500.html

Has the Command Line Outstayed Its Welcome?
There are many topics that tend to come up in a recurring manner around
water coolers throughout the Linux blogosphere, and not just the great
"Year of" debate, either. No indeed, another shining example more than a
little familiar to most of us who spend any time here is the much-abused
command line -- specifically, whether it's outlived its usefulness in
this era of the GUI.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75498.html

Google Makes Its Play in Tablets
Google launched its Nexus 7 tablet on Wednesday at its Google I/O
developers conference in San Francisco. The tablet, which is made by
Asus, has a 1,280 x 800 display. It has an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core
CPU with that processor's associated 12-core GPU. The Nexus tablet 7 has
a front-facing camera and supports WiFi, Bluetooth and near-field
communications.

Today's Story Highlights

Zynga Pulls Out the Glue Gun
Zynga made a number of announcements at its Unleashed event in San
Francisco Tuesday, most of them aimed at the same goal: making its
services "stickier" to its players. "Social games have become a crowded
marketplace," said Scott Steinberg, digital game consultant and
principal in TechSavvyGlobal.com.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75487.html

Ancient EU Dispute Ends With $1B Fine Against Microsoft Upheld
Today in international tech news: Microsoft's attempt to overturn an EU
fine fails, leaving it on the hook for more than $1 billion. Also: The
New York Times launches a Chinese-language website; arsonists attack
Microsoft's Greek headquarters in what multiple outlets say is a protest
against austerity measures; Apple launches iTunes stores across Asia --
but not in China.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75488.html

Terabits by Twisted Light: The Optical Communications Revolution
Twisted infrared light beams have propelled wireless data transmission
to a dazzling 2.56 terabits per second via a system developed by a
multinational team of researchers led by the Optical Communications
Laboratory at the University of Southern California. The process
essentially twists beams of light so that they can carry more data, more
quickly than ever before.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75486.html

AI System Learns to Recognize Faces and Felines
A neural network built over the years by researchers from Stanford
University and Google has managed to teach itself to recognize faces and
cats. The network consists of 16,000 processors on a cluster of 1,000
computers. After being exposed to 10 million images downloaded from the
Internet, the network software learned to recognize human and cat faces,
as well as human bodies, according to the researchers.

The Do-Not-Track Balancing Act
When Microsoft announced recently that Internet Explorer 10 will have
its Do Not Track feature turned on by default, it seemed those concerned
about online privacy would hail the move as a step in the right
direction. Consumer advocates and other groups had been agitating for
such a feature for some time.

7-Zip Stuffs Data Tight, but It's Hard to Get a Grip on This Zipper
7-Zip and p7Zip belong to a family of file compression utilities that
are among the best available for Linux/Unix. So you would think that the
development communities would offer to Linux users what is available in
similar compression apps on the Windows and Mac platforms. Think again!

Today's Story Highlights

Facebook's Email Bungle: Not What It Did but How It Did It
For every step Facebook takes toward improving consumer privacy and
information control, it seems to take about five giant steps back. The
latest example is the unilateral change it made to users' listed email
addresses: It converted them to @facebook.com, and messages now go to
the Facebook email in-box rather than to their original destinations.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75477.html

Gigapixel Photography: It's All in the Details
To test the 1-gigapixel AWARE-2 camera his team developed, David Brady,
a professor at Duke, took a few snapshots of tundra swans. "Normally,
with bird photography you're rushing to point the camera in the right
direction," he said. "Here we just took a bunch of pictures and then
went back later to see what we had.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75466.html

Microsoft and EU Near the End of a Long and Winding Legal Fight
Today in international tech news: After a decade, Microsoft and the EU
are nearing the end of a marathon legal tango. Also: A British
intelligence agency issues some dire warnings about cyberattacks and
terrorism; "Angry Birds" tries to tap into -- not fight -- piracy in
China; and police investigate racist tweets in England after a
heartbreaking soccer defeat.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75475.html

iOS Maps Goes On Location With Yelp
Apple's upcoming, self-made Maps app for iOS will include a check-in
feature that ties in with review site Yelp, further integrating social
networking and location-based services into iOS 6, according to a
report. The new integration will allow iPhone users to check in right on
Apple's Maps screen rather than access the site via Yelp's
separate app.

Is Microsoft Feeding the Android Machine?
The month of June has not been kind to Microsoft hardware partners. Last
week, Redmond revealed that it's getting into the Windows tablet game
with the introduction of the Surface, meaning it will compete for sales
with its own allies. It followed that up with news about WinPho 8.

Facebook's Find Friends Feature Tiptoes In, Tiptoes Out
Facebook rolled out a new mobile social discovery tool recently, only to
deactivate it hours later and pull it from its iOS and Android apps. The
service, which Facebook called "Find Friends Nearby," was designed to
help Facebook users find others who were in the same vicinity.

Mass Effect 3 Fans May Get Steamed All Over Again
Bowing to fan outrage over the controversial ending of "Mass Effect 3"
earlier this year, BioWare is releasing an "extended cut" version of the
last game in the space epic trilogy. The game, expected to be made
available Tuesday, will answer many of the complaints users had about
the original ending, BioWare said.

Microsoft Gives Hardware Partners Some Hard Knocks (13:59 minutes)
In this episode: Microsoft takes the wraps off Surface, a line of
tablets that will run Windows 8 and will be made by Microsoft itself
rather than its hardware partners; Redmond also reveals its plans for
Windows Phone 8, which include a foundation-level rebuild but do not
include compatibility with existing Windows phones; Sen. Charles Schumer
expresses concern about Apple's and Google's eyes in the sky; reports
indicate the next iPhone will look very different on the bottom end;
Facebook shares inch their way out of the crater they created in their
first week on the market.

Today's Story Highlights

Leaked Docs Illuminate Google's Nexus Tablet Aspirations
Google will unveil a 7-inch tablet based on the Nvidia quad-core Tegra 3
processor and running Android 4.1, aka "Jelly Bean," at the Google I/O
developers conference this week, according to Gizmodo Australia. The
device will reportedly be dubbed the "Nexus 7" and be built by Asus.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75458.html

More Surface Rumors Bubble Up
Microsoft announced its Surface tablet just last week, and already the
whispers have begun. It's going to be WiFi-only, some rumors say. Its
battery isn't quite as good as the iPad's, according to others. Price
has also been subject to speculation, and one report has indicated
Redmond will price the device between $600 and $1,000.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75462.html

The Death and Rebirth of Microsoft
Last week, Microsoft effectively ended the model that created it. This
shouldn't have been a surprise, as the model hasn't been working well
for years and, as a result, Microsoft has been getting its butt kicked
all over the market by Apple. Well Microsoft apparently has had enough,
and it decided to make a fundamental change and go into hardware.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75461.html

Torvalds Drops F-Bomb on Nvidia
It's not often the "F-word" figures prominently in any major debate here
in the Recently, however, it was catapulted into a starring role when it
was uttered by none other than Linus Torvalds himself during a talk at
the Aalto Centre for Entrepreneurship in Finland earlier this month. The
topic was Nvidia, to be precise -- specifically, its longstanding
lackluster approach to Linux.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75467.html

AudioGlove's Smart Design Makes iPhone Speakers Scream
If you're like me, you're not impressed with the Apple's ability to
create a decent speakerphone experience on any of its iPhone models. At
the same time, occasionally you want to watch a video or listen to music
on your iPhone and all you really have is the tiny built-in speaker.
Maybe you don't have headphones, or maybe they aren't applicable at the
moment in time you want to play something.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75464.html

Nintendo Gives Mobile Gamers a Much Bigger Playground
Nintendo has long been known for surprises, but it caught the gaming
world off guard on Thursday, when North American COO Reggie Fils-Aime
revealed the 3DS XL during a Nintendo Direct video post. The new duo-
screen system reportedly will be 90 percent larger than the previous
version, with a 4.88-inch top display and 4.18-inch screen on the
bottom.

Leaked Proposals Set Stage for UN Squabble Over Internet Freedom
The United States is battling over proposed United Nations regulations
that could place new burdens and restrictions on Internet companies and
users. The trouble is rooted in the decision of the UN's International
Telecommunication Union to overhaul International Telecommunication
Regulations that outline the principles governing the way international
voice, data and video traffic is handled.

The Infinitely Agile Cloud (31:27 minutes)
The cloud's potential is limited only by the imagination. Insurance
provider Seven Corners, for instance, has harnessed the flexibility of
the cloud to generate entirely new streams of revenue. "This year we
rolled out an application called 'Access' that is so configurable you
could run any kind of insurance services through it, whether you're
insuring parrots, cars, people, trucks or whatever," said CIO George Reed.

Today's Story Highlights

In the Lap of Luxury: Tesla's All-Electric Model S
This summer, Tesla is rolling out its luxury electric car, the Model S,
amid much acclaim. "The design and efficiency of the Model S are
unparalleled," said electric vehicle consultant Shannon Arvizu. "It's a
stunningly beautiful car that is incredibly affordable to operate and
has 'oh-my-god' wow performance. It's everything you could ever want in
a luxury vehicle."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75441.html

Sen. Asks Google, Apple to Control Their Peeping Tom Planes
Google and Apple are bent on a mission to provide the world -- or at
least users of their respective technologies -- with digital images of
every place on this planet. Using their systems is the only way many
people can see for themselves what everyday life is like in faraway
places. However, these companies are capturing actual people as they go
about their everyday activities -- and publishing those images.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75436.html

Blast From the Past: Using an Antenna to Grab Free TV
Bombarded by ads for cable and satellite TV packages, or seductive
programming bundles offered by Internet service providers and phone
companies, it may be easy to forget that it's possible to pick up much
of that programming via a sub-hundred dollar indoor antenna reminiscent
of the rabbit-ear days.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75438.html

Court Cuts Samsung a Slice of Dutch Apple Pie
Today in international tech news: In the two companies' latest courtroom
spat, Apple has been ordered to pay damages to Samsung for infringing on
patents. Also: The Pirate Bay cofounders are seeking a hearing at a
human rights court; ESPN ups the ante for Wimbledon coverage; British
neo-Nazis tap into YouTube's revenue-sharing program and more.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75443.html

Does Selfishness Make the FOSS World Go 'Round?
Well it's been a Linus-heavy month here in the Linux blogosphere, what
with Torvalds winning the Millennium Technology Prize and all, and even
now that trend appears to be continuing. The most recent conversation,
however, has focused on comments Linus made in the wake of his big win.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75439.html

Microsoft's Pretty, Prosaic Thing
The newly announced -- but not yet available anywhere -- Microsoft
Surface tablet looks to be quite a cool device. Judging by the outside
design, it looks well-made and pleasing. That's a great start. It gets
better after a guy like me grudgingly appreciates the built-in, snap-off
keyboard covers.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75435.html

Microsoft Joins Windows and WinPho at the Core
Microsoft on Wednesday announced a plethora of new features for app
developers in Windows Phone 8, its next mobile operating system. Windows
Phone 8 will share a core with Windows 8, meaning app devs can write one
app and have it run across mobile devices as well as desktops supporting
Windows 8.

Today's Story Highlights

IBM's Sequoia Towers Above All Other Supercomputers
IBM's Sequoia supercomputer has headed up the most recent Top500 list of
the world's fastest supercomputers. The list, released on Monday at the
2012 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, is
compiled twice a year. Sequoia has overtaken Fujitsu's K Computer,
installed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science in
Kobe, Japan.

FCC to Revisit Cellphone Radiation Regs
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission reportedly plans to
reevaluate its current standards on cellphone radiation. The FCC's
current guidelines set maximum levels; however, they were last updated
in 1996. Considering the advancement and growth of cellphone technology
over the last 16 years, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has called for
an review.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75407.html

Skyping in Ethiopia Could Result in Stiff Jail Term
Ethiopia has passed a draconian new law criminalizing the use of Voice
over Internet Protocol services such as Skype or Google Talk. People who
violate the ban will find themselves facing 10-to-15 years in prison.
The government has cited national security as a reason.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75406.html

Watchdogs Get a Whiff of Google's Government Privacy Policy
There's evidence that Google's consumer privacy policy is being extended
to government contracts for its software services, according to
SafeGov.org. Citing contracts in Texas, Illinois and California, the
group contends that Google's privacy policy is the "minimum standard"
for handling customer data under the contracts.

Acer Pokes Retina With New A700 Tablet
Acer on Thursday announced the Iconia Tab A700, an Android tablet with a
1080p high-definition display. The device's 10.1-inch screen has 1,920
by 1,200 resolution, which is pretty close to that offered by the newest
iPad's Retina Display. The A700 has an Nvidia Tegra 3 Super 4-Plus-1
quad-core mobile processor running at 1.3 GHz.

Japanese Hackers Spread a Different Kind of STD
Today in international tech news: Six men are arrested in Japan for
propagating a virus that spread via a porn site and allegedly netted
them more than $250,000. Also: Google releases a report detailing
removal requests from governments around the world, and there's a
MacBook Pro shortage in the UK.

Best Windows 8 Laptop in the Market: The MacBook Pro Retina Edition
When testing a new OS from Microsoft, finding the right hardware is
often the biggest problem. Many of the negative reviews of Windows 8,
including my own, are tied to hardware that just wasn't designed for it.
I was at Microsoft's TechEd last week, and after hearing presenters
drill down in detail on the specs for what an ideal Windows 8 laptop
should be, I experienced an aha moment.

Newegg, Norma and the Case of the Squealing Linux PC
With all the recurring debates and "year of" discussions here in the
Linux blogosphere, it's hard not to suffer frequent pangs of deja vu
even on the best of days. Last week, however, was not the best of weeks,
at least not for one Linux user by the name of Norma, who had an
experience eerily reminiscent of one Linux Girl remembers writing about
back in 2010.
