Today's Story Highlights

Behind the Pay Wall, Part 1: Fan Sites Play Ball
The University of Florida coaching staff was short on selling points
when it set out to recruit high school football players in early 1990.
For starters, the head coach was brand new, his predecessor having been
unceremoniously dismissed in the middle of the '89 season because of
rule infractions. What's more, one of the best players in school
history, Emmitt Smith, decided to forgo the 1990 season and enter the
NFL.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73229.html

FSF's Star Turn in the Android FUDathon, Part 2
Mr. Smith was kind enough to reply two days later: "Hi Barbara, Thanks
for your feedback. I've responded to some your specific points below.
I'm aware that a license change in Linux would require significant
effort. However, that doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be done. I wish
it was easier for them, but we think they stand to benefit from
upgrading even in this current situation. ..."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73231.html

BleachBit Leaves Your File System Sparkling and Grime-Free
One of the most essential computer maintenance tasks is pruning outdated
and orphaned files from the deep, dark dungeons within the Linux filing
system. These disconnected scraps and bits are endemic to the file
structure in any operating system, Linux included. Weeding the Linux
software garden is not something that typical users do often enough.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73218.html

The Magic of QR Codes
You might have seen them without knowing what they are: little black and
white boxes with squiggles and lines in the corner of a magazine
advertisement, on a band's poster in a coffeeshop, or even on a T-shirt.
Those things, called "QR codes," or "quick response codes," are part of
a whole new way of connecting with consumers via their smartphones.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73223.html

The Big iSleep
News from Apple reads like a mystery novel over the past week. It all
started with the apparent loss of an iPhone prototype in a San Francisco
bar. That scenario may sound familiar. Last year, the gadget site
Gizmodo made headlines by obtaining an iPhone 4 prototype after an Apple
employee left the test model in another Bay Area bar. The police were
eventually involved.

The Wedding Crashers (14:27 minutes)
In this episode: AT&T's proposed buyout of T-Mobile is thrown into
disarray after the U.S. Department of Justice files a civil antitrust
suit to prevent the deal from happening; the outing of a WikiLeaks
encryption key may expose countless confidential sources involved in
last year's CableGate; a Google shareholder sues the company over its
Canadian drug ad foul-up; iTunes pulls TV show rentals; HP says it's
going to make one last production run of its defunct TouchPad tablet.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/shared/audio/ect-recap-2011-09-02.mp3

Today's Story Highlights

Researchers Rev Up Electric Nano-Motors
Researchers at Tufts University announced Sunday they've created an
electrical motor many thousands of times smaller than the width of a
single human hair, a breakthrough they claim could eventually lead to
innovations in healthcare and technology. The microscopic motor is the
size of a single molecule and is electrically charged.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73226.html

Scotland Yard Tightens the Pincers on Anonymous
It's been another wild and crazy week for the security community.
Scotland Yard arrested two suspected members of Anonymous and LulzSec
Thursday. Meanwhile, the major players in the browser market -- Google,
Microsoft and the Mozilla Foundation -- have chopped Dutch certificate
DigiNotar off at the knees, apparently because it was slow to warn that
hackers had broken into its network and issued rogue SSL certificates.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73215.html

Chronicles of Desktop Deaths Foretold
Now that September has arrived at last, life has taken on a different
tone here in the Northern reaches of the Linux blogosphere. After all,
just around the corner now are crisp and cool days, Halloween, and the
crunch of fallen leaves underfoot as nature prepares for its long winter
sleep. It's perhaps no great surprise, then, that many thoughts seem to
have turned to death and dying in this season of decay.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73222.html

Speedtest Won't Fix Your Poky Connection, but It Sure Is Nice to Know
For the most part, I barely notice the incoming speed of my Internet
data connections on my iPhone 4 or iPad 2. Sure, if I want to download
something large, I make sure I'm on a WiFi connection. If I'm in a car,
I'll think twice about attempting to download a bunch of email out of
range of an AT&T 3G tower.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73207.html

FSF's Star Turn in the Android FUDathon, Part 1
My first thought was that someone was engaging in click-bait journalism.
Even the title of the post -- "Android GPLv2 termination worries - one
more reason to upgrade to GPLv3" -- is something I would expect from
anti-Android trolls, not the Free Software Foundation. The conclusion at
the bottom of the article, that companies using Android should urge
Linux developers to switch to the GPLv3, is so bad it's not even wrong.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73213.html

August Insanity: So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye!
We have crazy months from time to time, but August will likely go down
in history as one of the biggest tech news months of any year. From the
torpedoing of Android by Google, to the off-again, on-again TouchPad
sales, to the departure of Steve Jobs, to the slashing of Oracle's $1.3
billion settlement, to the... Well I'll get to all this in a moment, and
I'm sure we are all glad to look back at the insane month of August.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73205.html

The School of Gaming
Ludology or narratology? These are the two generally accepted approaches
to thinking about games. Though not incompatible, these two branches of
knowledge nonetheless contend for pre-eminence among video game designer
priorities. The first emphasizes play, the second story. In literary
theory, narratology is the study of narrative structure.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73217.html

iCloud's Shadow on Security
Apple's announcement of its upcoming iCloud service has sparked a flurry
of excitement in the industry. Some expect the iCloud will help Apple
keep customers closer to its bosom -- make them "stickier," in
analystspeak. Others think the iCloud will give a boost to cloud
computing. The iCloud will automate the backup and storage of data --
music, photos and what-have-you -- and make it easy to set up new
iDevices.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73221.html

VirtualBox: A Clean Sandbox for Your Linux Desktop
Constantly testing software and tinkering with a variety of Linux
operating systems puts my multiple test-bench computers to constant use.
Granted, Linux comes with a lot fewer security risks. But dealing with
unknown factors and beta glitches can be time consuming to correct when
they take down an entire box.

Today's Story Highlights

Big Mango Falls From HTC's Tree
HTC has shown off its first two smartphones running Mango, Microsoft's
upcoming update for its Windows Phone mobile operating system. The
new devices, the Titan and the Radar, are being shown to some consumers
in London, Paris, Madrid and Berlin. The Titan has a 4.7-inch display --
much larger than a typical smartphone's display and more than 30 percent
larger than the iPhone 4's 3.5-inch screen.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73206.html

The Amazon Tablet: Lying, Waiting, Learning?
The HP TouchPad's demise and semi-resurrection seems to have lent new
strength to rumors that Amazon is working on its own tablet. Some rumors
hold that Amazon will offer one tablet; others contend it will offer
two. The speculation is that Amazon will sell the hardware at a loss and
make up for that through selling content, which it has in abundance.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73203.html

iPhone 4 Sole Survivor of Blazing BB Gun Assault
I recently carried out an experiment to help determine which company
manufactures the strongest glass digitizer screens. My test: I shot the
screens with a cheap BB Gun. The first round was with the screen taped
to a wall. The next was in a box with no backing. At the end, I just
repeatedly tried to smash the screen on the corner of a desk. Like I
said, this was really scientific.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73201.html

Mozilla Targets Tablets With New Browser Designs
The Mozilla Foundation is enhancing the tablet version of its Firefox
browser. It's leveraging Android Honeycomb but retaining familiar visual
elements of Firefox such as the signature big back button and
distinctive tab shape, according to a blog post by Ian Barlow, who works
on Mozilla's mobile user experience team.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/73199.html

WikiLeaks Stews in Its Own Juice
Another global security mess is in the making, on the heels of the
publication of thousands of sensitive security documents obtained by
WikiLeaks. However, in this particular instance, WikiLeaks insists it
didn't mean to do it. Last week, WikiLeaks reportedly made some 134,000
diplomatic cables available.

benefits from an automated lifecycle approach. "When you've got like 80
percent of all incidents raised automatically, it takes a massive burden
off the 24/7 teams and the customer support guys, who are not spending
the majority of their time creating incidents but actually working to
resolve them," said InTechnology's Ed Jackson.

Today's Story Highlights

Will Samsung's Ugly Duckling Become a Swan?
Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Note, which sports a 5.3-inch screen --
a size that places it between a typical smartphone and a tablet. It
features an HD Super AMOLED display with a 180-degree viewing angle. The
device comes with a slide-out stylus called the "S Pen" and sports an 8-
MP rear camera and a 2-MP front camera for video chat.

US Travelers Abroad: Don't Get Gouged by Stiff Data Roaming Fees
Travel tools for the road include some of the killer apps that have
driven the smartphone market, like mapping. However, the ball and chain
is the cost of getting that data outside of your home market. For
example, U.S. carrier Sprint currently charges a whopping $19.45 per
megabyte to use its GSM data roaming agreements in Europe.

A Tale of Two Licenses
Well the wild ride that was August appears to have tapered off a bit as
the month drew to a close, so Linux bloggers have finally had a few days
to stop and catch their breath. Bartenders throughout the blogosphere
have had a chance to restock their supplies, and conversations have, for
the most part, returned to normal volumes. There's one exception,
however.

The Perils of 'Social Divide' Thinking
Dreamforce's two-and-a-half hour keynote on Wednesday featured plenty of
technology talk, and technology is neat -- don't get me wrong. The art
and science of managing customer relationships would be lost without it.
But one thing Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said early on really stuck in
my head. He said that the idea of a digital divide was no longer the
issue. It was the idea of a social divide.

Goodbye TV Show Rentals - and Goodbye External Hard Drives
My unhappiness with Apple's decision to cancel iTunes TV show rentals
for 99 cents led me to get a glimpse of Apple's new iCloud-related
world. As it was widely reported, Apple decided to ditch the rental
program because consumers overwhelmingly prefer to buy their TV shows. I
don't have the data in front of me, but I can't say I believe Apple on
this one.
