MacBookius Superior: Apple's New Super-Powered Mutant (14:05 minutes)
In this episode: Apple's WWDC kicks off with news about iOS 6 as well as
the introduction of the Retina MacBook Pro, a super-slim 15-inch
notebook with an extra-sharp display and solid-state drive; the U.S.
Department of Justice starts investigating ISPs' data caps; Verizon
offers customers new data plans that some could find expensive and
confusing; ICANN reveals a long list of proposed new top-level domains.

Today's Story Highlights

New Vizio Line Sleek, Light and Kind of Apple-ish
Vizio rolled out its first line of computer devices Thursday, including
CN15 laptops, the CT14/C15 Ultrabooks, and CA24/CA27 all-in-one PCs. The
thin, metallic devices in the computer line have drawn comparisons to
products made by Apple. And with the clean Microsoft Signature user
interface, they give the user an experience that's perhaps close to what
one would get on a Mac.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75392.html

Microsoft Event Drums Up Major Buzz
Microsoft invited reporters and industry experts this week to a special
event on Monday in Los Angeles, where it promises to make a "major"
announcement. Since then, speculation has been rampant about exactly
what that announcement will be, though Microsoft has not released any
further details. Theories that the announcement will be tablet-related
are dominating the conversation at the moment.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75390.html

Scientists Split Atom, Then Put It Back Together
Mention the words, "splitting the atom," and most people will
automatically think of nuclear fission, bombs and radioactivity.
Recently, however, physicists at Germany's University of Bonn not only
managed to "split" an atom but also put it back together again.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75370.html

Australian Etailer Puts the Screws on IE7 Users
Today in international tech news: An Australian online retailer
institutes a tax on people using Internet Explorer 7. Also: A nine-year-
old in Scotland who had taken to blogging about her school lunches is
muzzled -- and then unmuzzled -- by school authorities, maligned
manufacturer Foxconn experiences yet another suicide in China, and the
UK rejects Julian Assange's request to reopen his extradition appeal.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75389.html

MetroFax: Faxing on the Fly Is Almost a Breeze
Reports of the demise of the fax machine may be premature if research in
Chico Harlan's article in The Washington Post last week is to be
believed. Fax machines are still in 59 percent of Japanese homes, Harlan
found. They are still popular because of a cultural interest in the use
of paper and handwriting.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75375.html

Obama Signs Order for Full-Bore Broadband Expansion
President Barack Obama on Thursday signed an executive order intended to
make broadband construction along federal roadways and properties in the
United State more effective and up to 90 percent cheaper. Building a
nationwide broadband network will strengthen the U.S. economy and put
more Americans back to work, the president said.

Data Management: The Next Generation (39:55 minutes)
What the data management world needs now is a next-generation,
integrated and simplified approach for fast backup and recovery that
spans all essential corporate data. The solution means bridging legacy
and new data, scaling to handle big data, implementing automation and
governance, and integrating the functions of backup protection and
disaster recovery.

Today's Story Highlights

Sony Charges Into Smartphone Scene With Xperia Ion
Sony has launched its first Xperia smartphone since buying out Ericsson
in February. The Xperia Ion is a 4G LTE device that will be available
from AT&T June 24 for $100 with a two-year agreement. The Ion has a 4.6-
inch 1080p HD Reality Display powered by Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine and
can be hooked up to a TV set or a Sony SmartWatch.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75384.html

Liberating Your Locked GSM Phone
Wireless carriers sell you "postpaid" contract phones at a considerable
discount. The carrier expects to recoup its outlay -- the full price of
the equipment -- over the life of the contract that you sign. Often, it
will lock the equipment to its network through a technique that stops
the phone working if the SIM card ID and the phone serial number, aka
"IMEI number," don't match what's configured.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75371.html

German Stream King Headed to Slammer
Today in international tech news: The founder of an uberpopular German
streaming website has been sentenced to more than four years in prison.
Elsewhere, Nokia announced layoffs to the tune of 10,000 jobs, and the
English Premier League auctioned off broadcast rights with an eye toward
mobile devices, tablets and Internet-connected TVs.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75381.html

Linus, GNOME 3, and Much Ado About Desktop Interfaces
If ever there was a week to make a person believe in the cosmic forces
of fate, this might be it. To wit: Linus Torvalds -- always a topic of
interest here in the Linux blogosphere -- has been a particularly "hot
topic" in recent weeks thanks to his critical comments earlier this
month about GNOME 3.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75377.html

The New MacBook Pro Aims for the Heart, Not the Head
With a heavy heart, I have decided not to the buy the gorgeous new
MacBook Pro with Retina Display. But I lust after the idea of 2,880 by
1,800 pixels gloriously showing off my awesome photos of the Grand
Tetons, Half Dome and small children running from the cold droplets of a
sprinkler system under a hot summer sun.

Today's Story Highlights

AMD Flexes ARM to Enhance Hardware Security
AMD on Wednesday announced it will develop a platform security processor
based on the ARM Cortex-A5 processor. The company has entered a
strategic partnership with ARM that will let it use ARM's TrustZone
technology. AMD plans to provide development platforms with TrustZone
security features on select APUs in 2013 and expand to more
products later.

Asus Cross-Breeds Phone, Tablet and Notebook to Create PadFone
After several missed deadlines, Asus has finally introduced a
combination smartphone, tablet and notebook computer aimed at consumers
who are tired of toting around disparate devices. However, delays in
bringing the product to market, coupled with developments in wireless
pricing and cloud storage, may have closed the window of opportunity for
the all-in-one device, dubbed "PadFone."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75367.html

Living Nanomachines Show Researchers the Ropes
Nanomachines are, simply, very small machines, and the goal of medical
nanotechnologists is to create these tiny machines in order to treat
diseases at the molecular level. The body, however, already has plenty
of its own nanomachines in the form of proteins that assemble themselves
to transform their environment.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75351.html

UK to Google: About Those Street View Records ...
Today in international tech news: The UK is reopening its investigation
into Street View's data collection activities -- even though British
authorities told Google it could delete the relevant information back in
2010. Meanwhile, in France, the president's partner pens an unfortunate
tweet about the prez's ex, and Sweden's democratic Twitter policy runs
into trouble.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75369.html

Liferea: A Feed Reader That Prefers a Simple Life
Linux Feed Reader, aka "Liferea," is part of a highly specialized
category of apps. It is an aggregator for online news feeds, weblogs and
podcasts. As such, it provides a tool for pulling into one spot an
eclectic collection of your newsfeed content so you do not have to go to

Apple Puts Siri in the Driver's Seat
Along with the new software and hardware offerings Apple announced on
Monday came a list of automakers that will partner with Cupertino to tie
their cars to Siri. A new version of the virtual personal assistant will
be released with iOS 6. The roster of carmakers includes Audi, BMW,
Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft Sends In the Clouds at TechEd 2012
Microsoft put its updated cloud offerings and business tools in the
spotlight Monday for the start of its annual TechEd Conference. In the
keynote address kicking off the confab, Satya Nadella, president of
Microsoft server and tools business, discussed Microsoft's focus on
helping consumers transition to cloud computing.

iOS 6: Plenty of New Features but Where's the Innovation?
Among the highlights at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference was the
presentation on Monday of a laundry list of enhancements to be found in
iOS 6. The 200-plus new features and functions include Facebook
integration, a Maps app that has turn-by-turn navigation and a new
Flyover view.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/75358.html

Will Tablets Revolutionize TV?
The adoption of tablets has reached critical mass in the U.S., according
to comScore. In fact, one in every four smartphone owners also used a
tablet during the three-month period ending April 2012. What stands out
most about this particular study, though, is the link it makes between

Today in international tech news: TomTom shares dart north after the
navigation company announces it's partnering with Apple. Also: A
proposed law in the UK could compel websites to disclose the identities
of users accused of online harassment, and a Chinese e-commerce company
will subsidize its vendors to drive down prices and lure shoppers.

Plague, Inc.: Crashes, Crashes, We All Fall Down
At the time I'm writing this, "Plague, Inc." is the hottest-selling app
in the App Store. It caught my eye as it perched there on the "Top Paid"
list, so I looked into it expecting to see some kind of attempt to ride
on the coattails of last year's "Contagion," a movie in which Gwyneth
Paltrow plays a particularly unglamorous role.

The Over/Under on Cloud Security (36:24 minutes)
Ever since the term "the cloud" came into use, security has been one of
the subject's most hotly debated topics. Is it riskier from a security
perspective to conduct operations and store data outside a business' own
four walls? Or can security actually be better in the cloud, in the same
way a safe deposit box may be a safer place to store valuables than
one's own home?

Today's Story Highlights

Firefox 13 Tweaks Tabs, Home Pages, Speed and Security
Mozilla released Firefox 13 Wednesday, which it says is a speedier,
safer version of the open source Web browser. The newly launched Firefox
also boasts a new home page and tab page layout similar to those of
competing browsers such as Google's Chrome. Before the upgrade, when
Firefox users clicked to open a new tab, they saw simply a blank page.

Apple to Google Maps: Get Lost
Since the iPhone debuted five years ago, it's always used Google Maps as
the service behind the device's built-in Maps application. However, when
Apple releases the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 6,
Google Maps will reportedly be out of the picture. Aside from enmity
between the firms, Apple may want to dump Maps because it thinks it can
do a better job.

Encryption on the Go, Part 2
The growing consumerization of IT is turning into a security nightmare
for many IT departments, but it's perhaps hitting the healthcare
industry worst. "BYOD is an emerging issue in healthcare, as staff bring
their latest and greatest devices and ask to use them in their work,"
said Christina Thielst, vice president at Tower Strategies.

Google Says 'State-Sponsored,' Users Hear 'China'
Today in international tech news: Google didn't name names when it
issued a warning about potential state-sponsored attacks on its users,
but that hasn't stopped people from assuming that "state-sponsored"
translates to "China-sponsored." Also: Starbucks' Irish Twitter account
got followers steamed, and an ambitious plan could bring more mobile
access to Congo.

Corning's Willow Glass Moves Ahead of the Curve
Corning unveiled a new flexible glass -- called "Willow Glass" -- at the
Society for Information Display's Boston Display Week on Monday. It's
about as thick and flexible as a piece of paper, while having the
strength, durability and other qualities of existing glass. Willow Glass
can be made as thin as 0.05mm, which is far thinner than the current
0.2mm or 0.5mm display glass.

Nintendo Gambles on Gamepads
While rivals at Sony and Microsoft have long looked to create
encompassing living room entertainment devices, Nintendo once again
looked to what it does best -- namely to provide an immersive gaming
experience. At its Tuesday press conference at E3, the company suggested
that it could once again make a game-changing move.

Microsoft's SmartGlass Opens Windows All Over the Living Room
Microsoft demoed its new Xbox SmartGlass system at the Electronic
Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles on Monday. SmartGlass will connect
devices running Windows 8, Windows 8 RT, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android
to a user's Xbox 360 console. The Xbox SmartGlass app is available now
with select games and Xbox Live content.
